Fuji Another good band, this time with famous people

Same venue as last time. Yesterday a band came through that’s fronted by a guy I’ve known about and liked since I was in high school, Scott McCaughey. We loved his band The Young Fresh Fellows, even covered one of their songs a lot. In this iteration, the band is called The Minus Five, and it features Mr. Peter Buck (from R.E.M.) to boot. Plus Jenny from the Decemberists, if you know them. Anywho, Peter’s well enough known that people drove in from far away to see it last night, crowd was big again, show was great.

I got to talk to him before the opener. I used to work on their fanclub when I was in college (in Athens, where they were from). I worked downstairs from their office, so I knew all 6 employees well, because they came in religiously every day to get breakfast and/or lunch. It was surreal to see him again, shake his hand, and chat about nothing for 2 minutes. The guy who scored a MASSIVE radio hit with a mandolin-based song in the middle of the gloomy grungy 90s (Losing My Religion). The guy whose band signed the largest ever record deal at that point, in the mid-90s.

Wife was kind enough to grab my bag before meeting me down there, but my bag only had the 18-55 and 50-230 in it … nothing truly fast. But I think I did ok, I liked some of these. The band doesn’t move around a ton either, so it’s not like you can get interesting motion / action shots, unless you’re allllways prepared, and a little lucky.

Peter

The guy that works for me saw whatever band Mike Mills is playing in these days a few weeks back. And he got his photo taken with him. It's nice to see Peter Buck and Mike Mills in photos just a few weeks apart. I nearly wore out those first 5 R.E.M. albums way back when. And I've finally learned to appreciate the rest of their work (when I had written them off as sell-outs.....LOL)

Mills has been touring with a big orchestral setup this year, I think. And I think he's enlisted John Neff and Will Tonks into that band, who are both insanely good musicians I knew back in college, because I keep seeing pics from the shows in their facebook feeds.

Another Tuesday, another good free concert. Another band I'd never heard of, who blew my doors off. Tango Alpha Tango, from Portland, been around 11 years or so, guitarist is just incredibly good. More than "good," he has incredibly good taste, and a great touch. Plays without a pick, big loud hot guitar, very bluesy, deep low open tunings, complex chords, killer solos. Once again, I got to sit against the edge of the stage and shoot / stare. Had the 56 and 35 1.4 with me this time. 56 did most of the lifting.

Slightly microphonic pickup, the yell came through and distorted through the amp.
