"Aviation Photo Thread" (Planes, Helos, Balloons, etc)...

I've used tripods. Long distance scenic shots, slow shutter speeds, night, macro, some portrait, etc,... but I didn't even consider packing the tripod for the trip to the waterfront for the airshow. I don't know what focal length that photographer was using but I had an upper limit of 600 and I had a hard time keeping them in the frame when they came within a reasonable distance. Most of my close shots were below 600mm. With a few exceptions, the long shots were mostly adversely affected by the atmospherics, so where the tripod may have been an advantage, it would most likely have been negated by the humidity in the air.
Oh, I implied I've never used a tripod for an air show

I just can't imagine how long after my knees would hurt carrying a lens that ginormous!

A reason why some of us used APS-C or m43 gear - hauling the big guns and super-teles not really an option for us.

I probably missed it - what gear are you going to RIAT with? (Unless I'm confusing you with another poster?)

Whatever you take, enjoy the show.

40-150mm f/2.8 with the MC-20 and MC-14 for my primary lens. I thought about renting, but I think it's overkill.

I'm going to Scotland the day after so I'll have on me the 12-40mm f/2.8 and at least the Laowa 10mm f/2.

I work at a military air station near a civilian airport so I'm going to try to get some practice in... :)

So as of right now, it looks cool, cloudy, and with showers for the RIAT -- Lordwilling, the weather will clear up, but otherwise looks like the 40-150mm with the MC-14 might be in order...

RIAT was a washout on Friday, left at 1:40, completely drenched. Not much flying, didn't stop raining all day.. you can see the rain on my efforts.. fyi, 100-400 was enough if you are in the crowdline (didn't use the 1.4tc)
Hopefully I'll get another try from a local field on Sunday. Hats off to the pilot in the Grippen E and the Saudi display team, it was very challenging..

Thanks for the report, and nice photos! I'll be there on Sunday too. Currently lovely weather in London, so hopefully it'll hold out west...

Regardless of the conditions Nigel, those are all great shots.

Love the shot of the C-17.

Was too late applying for tickets this year - I've set multiple diary reminders for next year's show. Park and view for the arrivals last year was a nice relaxing day too.

My electronic idiot (smartphone) keeps track of everything in Google Calendar.
Except that Google got it wrong. The year 2000 was not a leap year, as the year number was divisible by 400 ...

So all dates prior to the year 2000 and before 28 February 2000 are wrong by one day ...

I have emailed them, but don't expect a correction.

Managed to get to RIAT (well, Totterdown farm nearby..) on the Sunday. Much better weather - only one shower! Here are a sample.. ( more here )

The Me 262 was a surprise! Wonderful shots every last one; I think the wet weather added to the fast jet images👍

I'm not into planes at all, but what a stupendous series you've captured.
Absolutely outstanding Nigel.
