I've used tripods. Long distance scenic shots, slow shutter speeds, night, macro, some portrait, etc,... but I didn't even consider packing the tripod for the trip to the waterfront for the airshow. I don't know what focal length that photographer was using but I had an upper limit of 600 and I had a hard time keeping them in the frame when they came within a reasonable distance. Most of my close shots were below 600mm. With a few exceptions, the long shots were mostly adversely affected by the atmospherics, so where the tripod may have been an advantage, it would most likely have been negated by the humidity in the air.
