Big LR update- AI NR (Lightroom and Classic)

Yesterday (April 18, 2023) Adobe entered the modern noise removal arena. Yesterday’s release includes real AI noise reduction in Lightroom and Lightroom Classic.

I have been a big fan of DxO Photo Lab for the Deep Prime noise reduction. Until now I think it has been the best there is with Topaz a close second. The limited testing I have done with the new LR version changes that. It seems to be significantly better than DxO (which I think is fantastic) and I am not seeing any artifacts like I get with Topaz.

I haven’t had much chance to do extensive testing but my first impression is WOW! If this is as good as it seems this will change my workflow to LR only.

So here are some shots from a quick test. This was taken with a Sony RX100iv at ISO 12,800. I did not attempt to match the color profiles between LR and DxO since all I was after was NR results.

Lightoom v6.3 Enhanced Noise Reduction (default 50) (also adjusted lighting since DxO default does)

This will help my m43 shots :)
I agree. I am mostly an mu43 shooter but did this test with my 1" sensor just to provide a bigger challenge. I still think DxO does a great job and may be a little bit better at retaining detail. But overall I like the look of the output from the new Lr Enhanced NR.

Here is a real world shot from a Mu43 file. This was shot at ISO 6400, the jpeg was unusable but DxO saved the file. Yesterday I processed it with the Lr update and like the results better. This is a very tight crop to show the detail:

Thanks for the post and the examples. I had no idea about this release. After a quick web search, I came across the Adobe blog post about the new demonise feature. An interesting read.

Having just spent a merry hour or two playing with the LR's new denoise feature, I am very impressed so much so that I've changed my workflow. DxO have a serious problem especially as they've yet to fix the DeepPRIME XD colour cast issue on some Apple boxes, mine included.
