Well, not the fires, I dont want to be anywhere near them!! Anyone has photos of smoky outlooks, weird stuff etc... please post.

This is the sun at mid afternoon, shot through smoke and haze. And no, it wasnt *that* dark, just that the camera did what it could under the circumstances.

This is Sydney Harbour with that horrible yellow cast (it was orange the day before). I think anyone considering coming over here on a holiday from late November to the end of February should really think long and hard. This smoke is going to last all summer and is going to continue year on year.

Yep, I’m rather afraid that Australian summer should be avoided entirely from here on.

This was before yesterday took hold. That isnt cloud, its bushfire smoke and the colour is from the rising sun, which, I might add, was not visible at this location all day, because the smoke became even thicker. On weather radar, it looks like rain... but its not, its just thick smoke. Apparently we wont be getting any significant rain til mid January. If we are lucky. Water storage is down to around 40% for this region. And we are doing well, by comparison with some.

Getting away to Melbourne for 48 hours was what I needed, blue skies, clean air, it was just the most wonderful thing. Then I has a peek out of the plane window when returning to Sydney today and it didn't seem that bad. But that's relatively speaking. When I look at these images again from today (including one from a hospital), one can't help thinking that being in this place is not what your lungs want.

For reference, in New South Wales alone, over 700,000 hectares have been burnt out. Thats over 2,700 square miles. Queensland has lost about 1/3 that, which is still horrendous. Today, NSW was put onto Level 2 water restrictions. Thats 4 minute showers, no car washing except with a bucket every second day, lawn and plant watering between the hours of 4pm and 7am by hand, every second day. We are running out of water. Storage capacity for Australia in total is now down to 47.5%. NSW total Is 26.7%, and no rain predicted before January.

On the upsaide, now that the policticians have suddenly gone missing, at least we don't have to hear them every day.

This was taken from a flight from that took off from Sydney to Melbourne on Saturday, as dusk started turning to dawn. As it climbed out of the air out of Sydney, I noticed the colour of those clouds, full of orange smoke & ashes, waiting for the sun and wind to start burning it all down on the land.

Btw, unfortunately, the cruiseliner that's shown in my first picture up-thread is the one that went to the volcano today in New Zealand. It would have been about to leave to there when the picture was taken. Those poor dreadfully unfortunate passengers obviously have no clue what's about to come their way.

I’m very focused for your awful situation there ‘down under’. My friend’s daughter and her young family is living near Melbourne and my friend visit there every year in the beginning of the year, so will he this year also. And that makes me sickening worried.

I would pray for you if I believed it had something to do to stop the fires. I hope you eventually will get colder weather and some rain to stop the fires. Until then I can only hope that you all there are lucky enough not to get under the flames. Water shortage will be evident, though

Being in UK, I can see this is now getting significant news coverage.

Up until a day or three ago I had only followed this on the radio which is my normal means of accessing world news. Now I have seen reports on the television and the scale of this is apocalyptic. Back on the radio this lunchtime and there was an interview with an Australian who was on holiday with his wife and seven children. They were plucked off a jetty by a passing boat manned by a guy who's house had just been burned down 1 km upstream. As they boarded his boat their nearby car and caravan caught fire with the flames advancing to where they had just been. It is just unimaginable.

My heart is bleeding for Australia and these reports bring tears to my eyes.

It's easy to feel like "we are all doomed" because everywhere in the world we are seeing signs of a calamity that so many in power simple deny. Most folks that I know in the US have no idea about this disaster in Australia, although we are certainly seeing similar results in California.
