In both painting and photography, I've always enjoyed these high-contrast images, the style of which is called "chiaroscuro" (clair-obscur in French). According to my research on this site, a challenge on this topic dates back more than ten years.

As there is a thread called "High Contrast B & W" still very active, where many of posted images can be assimilated to the chiaroscuro style, for the current challenge, only color photos will be admited.

So for challenge #81, the theme is "Chiaroscuro in color".

You can find many examples in classic painting and photography.
All subjects will be interesting: portraits, landscape, still life, street photography... all you can imagine.

I'll add that I'll be picky about exposure, you need to see details in the highlights as much as in the shadows. So, avoid completely blown out highlights and completely blocked dark areas.

The standard rules apply:

As usual, this Challenge will consider originality, technical merit and artistic vision.
No change to the tried and trusted rules, which are as follows:
  1. Either take pictures that match the nominated theme or select one from your portfolio. You must be the photographer that created the image in order to enter it.
  2. Only one entry per challenge, please. If you want to withdraw an entry and replace it with another, that is OK, but you must make it clear in the post containing your replacement picture that this is what you've done. You can add or change the title and add to the edit line to let everyone know.
  3. The decision of the curator at the end of the challenge is final - don't give him/her a hard time about it: this is just a friendly photo challenge, after all!
  4. The winner will assume the responsibility of curator for the next Challenge, and as soon as possible post a message in a new thread in the Cameraderie Photo Challenges forum, with details of the new theme. Don't forget - the opening message must include a copy of these instructions, which also double as the rules.
  5. The curator cannot enter in his/her/their own challenge.

This challenge will run until May 31.

Here is a meaning of "Clair-obscur" found in a french dictionary : "In a painting, an engraving, a drawing, an effect consisting of modulating the light on a background of shadow, thus suggesting relief and depth."

And my example... (Not an entry)

Could it also be modulating the shadow on a background of light?

I'm pretty sure you can find several definitions that mean the same thing with nuances...
In the dictionary of l'Académie Française" you will find this one: Effect of shadow and light, of relief and depth, obtained by the interplay of light and dark values. I think that, for this style, the words "relief and depth" are as important and meaningful than the words "Shadow and light".
