First impressions? The size and weight really didn’t seem to be an issue today at all. My 28-70 is much more unwieldy. The range was perfect for what I was doing, and this was a one lens does all situation. The zoom throw is great. Easy to move from short to long in a single short one-handed twist. Although the collar isn’t removable, the foot comes off in a clever fashion. Color and contrast are great wide open. Sharpness appears good. Out of focus areas are pleasing. Stabilization doesn’t seem quite as good as on my other Canon lenses. I find Canon to be excellent at stabilization, almost m4/3 good. This is the first lens I’ve noticed any shake while using. Not bad, but not as good as others. A fair amount of pincushion distortion across the range, but easy to correct. Once lens profiles become more readily available, it’ll be a non-issue.

Edit - the manual focus ring is just perfect too. This really is an enjoyable lens to operate. If I’ve found a flaw, it’s yucky sun stars, which is not an area L lenses typically suffer…they usually excel. Nothing good until f16, when 22 point stars finally shapen up from the 11 blade aperture system.
Whelp, some final thoughts as I’ll be handing this one back this weekend and may not get out with it again beforehand. As mentioned above, I really enjoyed this lens more than I thought I would. The small criticisms I have are mostly cosmetic…
There are 4 empty screw holes where the power zoom controller accessory attaches. I’d prefer 4 small black countersunk screws to both keep water out, and give it a more finished look. There is also an electronic pad where the controller attaches. Although I’m sure it’s fine, a small rubber flap for weather sealing would be nice. The aperture ring only works in video…kind of weird. Would be nice to use in photo mode as well. Lastly, when one removes the foot, it’s unpainted raw metal. I’d immediately remove the six screws and paint this portion black, as it again, looks unfinished if you remove the foot. Painting black is one thing, but a nice powder coat from the factory would be another!

This lens is otherwise prefect for coporate events photography. Although large, I’d also say a one lens travel kit is doable with it. And of course, it’s really aimed for videographers, but I would not discount it for photography!
