Canon Showcase Canon G7X Image Thread

A few from the last few days in NYC. I seem to be using this camera a lot despite having my bigger guns along. It's a pretty great little urban camera - seems to do a pretty good to very good job at almost any kind of shooting I'm apt to do in an urban area and it's quicker and easier to switch between street mode and everything else than any other camera I've used...

This thread has been dead for a while. I had a quick weekend in Boston and, since the trip was more business related than recreational, only brought the G7X. Got into the city for a few hours on a very hot Sunday afternoon and took a few. I posted these on DPR with the 100% versions available, and got comments about the lens softness off of the center. And for sure, that's a real thing - I've known it since I got the camera. But it's not apparent to me until I get pretty close to 100% and don't see it at all at normal viewing sizes. Also, the lens seems best at f4 for this type of shooting, but I accidentally had it at f3.2 for several of these, and it's more visible on those...

Went into Philly with just the G7X and Coolpix A yesterday - never got into low light, so the Coolpix never came out of the bag. I don't know why I don't spend more time with the G7X. It has optical issues around the edges of images at the wide end, but I have to look pretty closely to notice them. The files don't handle processing like the Coolpix A or DF, but they do pretty well. And setup the way I have it setup, it's a nice little set of 24, 28, 35, 50, 85, and 100mm primes in a very small package. It's got me thinking pretty hard about the coming Nikon DL 18-50 - adding really wide angle options like 18 and 21mm to a camera like this (and presumably better optics because they weren't going for ultra-small) could make a combination of the two (DL for everything up to 35, G7X for anything between 50-100) a pretty compelling small kit for when I didn't feel like carrying a "real" camera...

Nice pics. Somehow I never warmed to the camera. Maybe it needs a little more PP on my part to enjoy the results, I don't know.

I don't take it out very much, so I'm not sure I can say I've "warmed" to it either. But that might be the category more than this particular model - I've owned a number of these small fixed zoom lens cameras and never really ended up using any of them that much. But when I do spend time with it, I tend to be really happy with this camera and the results it turns out. Except for some of the wide shots under pixel peeping, where the optics do fall apart a bit... I'm hoping the new Nikon, which constrains it's range to the wider end and which appears to have a much larger lens, will be really good in the 21-35mm area where I spend most of my time. And the G7X is just fine at the longer end - pretty impressive actually...

Makes sense. And I agree with the Nikon. But maybe I also got used to the Sony Menu which many people hate, and find the RX100 OOC settings much more versatile (I prefer to PP only the more worthy pics and keep a nicer OOC for the others)... I wanted to try a Canon and the 24-100 lens reach made me bought it... Well, not trying to bash the camera in its thread, just wondering what I would have bought given another chance or in case I need in the future.

I spent a few days in Oregon last week for my daughter's medical school graduation. It was not a photography intensive trip, so the only camera I took was the G7X. The vast majority of what I used it for were family and friends shots, which I won't share here. But on the last day of the trip, we did a hike not far from Corvallis and also made a stop at the Willamette Valley winery where I got a chance to look for a few images... It's really a fine little camera - great for the family tasks I mostly used it for and more than adequate for a bit of more conscious photography...
