Darktable 4's new "Blur" module can go only this far to emulate an anamorphic lens' flare. Might ask the devs and the community about future improvements or ideas for current version.

To me, it's a lot of things. I think the cinema style is more about color grading than the aspect ratio.

But I personally tend to keep with 2.35:1 anamorphic crop with a 16:9 letterbox just to make the viewer orient around the modern typical movie frame mindset. If I was a better colorist, it wouldn't be that necessary.

One could use the old Academy ratio with b&w pictures, could be very cinematic also.

To me, it's what Mike said. Plus, a certain look to the image. Color grading, film noir, etc. to give it look of a movie.
