Sony Cobalt Image made me fall back in love with my A7 III

Having shot with Fuji for the better part of last year, I got spoiled by Fuji's colors and skin tones. My A7 III has these wonderfully flexible and detailed RAW files, but I was always fighting the colors. Throwing on DXO film sims could work sometimes, but it felt like a bandaid.

I just started using Cobalt Image's Standard profile, and the fighting is over! My RAW imports almost always look decent straight away, and instead of using white balance and color mix to correct tones, I can just use them creatively to get the look I want.

Could just be a honeymoon period thing, but so far I'm very happy.

I don’t need Cobalt now as I have a ccd sensor in my main camera giving me the ‘look’ I want but if I have to upgrade to a more modern sensored camera then looking at that software is one of the first things I’d do. I’ve only seen not used the profiles but they do look convincing to my eye.

It's funny, I got Cobalt because I intended to use their Fuji simulations, but I was so happy with the standard profile that for now, I'm just sticking with that.

Sony updated their color science with the release of the A7 IV. I recall looking through some reviews back then comparing them to the 'coveted' Canon colors and they faired pretty well. I think they've been quietly dropping it into other cameras during firmware upgrades since then. In fact, they just released new firmware for the A7 III, A7R III, and A7R IV.

Cool, I'll have to go look for those updates.

Edit: Found the updates. Didn't brick either of my cameras! The 7R3 went from Ver 1.1 all the way up to 3.1 in one giant leap.
