Panasonic Considering getting a Panasonic LX10/LX15

Part of the reason for moving back to M43 was to reduce the number of cameras I had and therefore lighten the load I carried about.

Of the three cameras I sold, the only one I occasionally miss is the LX10/15.

So much power and versatility in such a small body. I seemed to discover a new feature every time I dipped into the PDF manual.

Three small niggles
- start up time felt too long when I was in a hurry,
- an after market grip was a ‘must have’,
- camera shake was a perennial problem due to size & weight.

The final point was definitely operator error. Apart from those, I loved it and sometimes, on a whim, I hunt for a used model in eBay. They hold their prices remarkably well.

Enjoy.

Resurrecting an old thread. I recently bought an LX10 on sale from Amazon. I was looking for a compact pocketable camera and had ruled out trying to get a GM5 with a 12-32. I'm getting used to using the LX10, but so far am favorably impressed. I agree about the laughably named front grip. It has such a slippery body. I got some CatTongue grip strips, which helps, but found a larger stick on grip from Engineer on the Prairie on Etsy and ordered it. Will get it soon. Having fun with it.
Congratulations on your new camera. Despite what I said back in 2018, I still use the LX10 as a complementary/pocket camera. I've accepted that it is a social/cataloguing/doc camera rather than something for landscapes or architecture. The 4k video is excellent, especially in moderate light which allows it to shoot wide open and lower shutter speeds. It's also great for museums and art galleries which are dark and in need of quiet operation. Mine has an inexpensive silicon skin from eBay which improve the grip and handling no end.

Is there any chance I can have a look at any video footage you may have shot with the LX10?

Jumping in on this thread as I am looking for a pocketable (as in the back pocket of my regular jeans/shorts) camera. How does the LX10 go for actually being pocketable?

I found a Canon IXUS 80 IS in a draw yesterday and took it with me on a dog walk. Whilst not up there technology-wise anymore, I did like the size and the fun of having a small camera with me! Now I appreciate the LX10 is larger but it is not too much bigger at least length and height-wise. The width being the critical element I suspect.

The LX10/15 is certainly portable given a large enough pocket. I carried it in a padded Lowepro case either on my belt or in one of the chest pockets of a lightweight Cortex walking jacket.

As you say, it’s not the smallest compact but I felt its versatility and features made it worth the effort of carrying around something bigger than a phone.

I wouldn't put the LX10 in the back of my jeans, but then I don't wear very loose jeans. Styles vary. I prefer the LX10 in a jacket pocket (like a hoodie or zip up jacket) or a small belt pouch. The LX10 is quite deep/thick compared with a IXUS 80. It's a fair bit thicker than the Canon S90 I recently dug out in a fit of nostalgia prompted by the impending DPReview shutdown.

As an aside, the LX10 runs rings around the S90 in operation speed, maximum aperture, focus speed and accuracy, raw file quality, video quality and even build. The S90 beats the LX10 only in size and battery life. As another aside, the LX10 takes the same battery as the Panasonic GM1, GM5 and GF7 micro four thirds cameras, so if you have a LX10, there are a few options for building a little but powerful kit.

A few weekends ago, I went out with the LX10 and Contax T3 in a bellroy sling, which is very flat and sits close to the body. The LX10 took some lovely pictures, and I often use it as a complementary cam if I'm carrying a larger camera with a prime. @TraamisVOS I'm gathering bits and pieces of footage for you.

Thanks, @Archiver for your comments. The fitting of the jeans/shorts pocket is really to allow for the days where a jacket or the like is not worn (summer, spring, autumn here :) ). Anyway, I mocked up a box to represent the size of the LX10 and I think it will work as a pocketable camera. I also looked at the Bellroy sling but they are really not my style.

I have narrowed my decision to either an LX10 or a Canon PowerShot G5 X Mark II. I still need to do a bit more research on the two options and of course, the Panasonic is cheaper at ~ AU$747 versus ~ $1,249 for the G5 X. Plus what if anything comes up on the second-hand market before my deadline purchase time of June will influence the decision.

It's pocketable if you have large baggy pockets. My LX10 barely fits in my jeans pockets and only in the jeans that has the larger pockets. Even then, it's a really, really tight squeeze, so tight that I'm afraid the camera will crack or my jeans will tear if I bent over or sat down.

The length and height of the camera isn't the problem, it's the thickness which includes the protruding lens bracket(?) and the width in combination.

Teds has the G7X Mk III for just on $999 right now. It doesn't have the EVF of the G5X II, but that's about the only difference I can see apart from the extra range. Camera Lane recently had a LX10 for sale, but it's gone now, I just checked.

DigiDirect has now dropped the G5 X price to $951 and the G7 X Mark III to $797 (back to $938 now - weird). I will take another look at the G7 X.

I do wonder if the EVF of the G5 X is really that useful.

I've never missed having an EVF on the LX10, if that's any indication. The LX10 has a pretty bright screen, though. Maybe check the specs of the G7X III's screen.

I've had the LX10 and the G7X II. I'd get the G7X, because of ergonomics. The "aperture ring" around the lens is really useless for such a tiny sensor. The lens focal range is noticeably limited compared to the G7X. And overall, the G7X is just layed out better, in my opinion. Things are easier to reach, it has a better grip, and it reacts a bit faster.

Frankly, I'm tempted by the G7X III myself. The LX10's reach is a bit limited, I would like to be able to take photos at the football and have been thinking of getting a Sony RX100 with longer reach, or a Panasonic travel zoom with 1 inch sensor. The smaller aperture of the Sony or Panasonic would be a bit of a loss, as would the diminished video quality in the case of the Canon, but I could live with that for the longer reach, I think.

Monitor LX10:
3.0" (7.5cm) TFT Screen LCD Display (1040k dots), Tiltable monitor/Static Touch Control/Field of View: Approx. 100%, Wide Viewing-angle, AF Coating

Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III
Tilt (upwards 180˚, downwards 45˚) 7.5 cm (3.0”) Touchscreen (TFT colour liquid crystal). 3:2 aspect ratio. Approx. 1,040,000 dots. Electrostatic Capacitive type

Not sure if there is any real difference between the two.

Just to give you an idea of what I did with my LX10.

When I was in Tokyo, I bought one of those compact camera pouches and a carabiner. I attached the carabiner to my jeans belt. This was how I carried the LX10 around. The pouch had an extra pocket in which I kept the filters and a single backup battery. It was never in the way, it was easily transportable, easily carried and still easily accessible. I could access the camera fairly quickly for quick shots.

In this way, I circumvented any issues with pocket sizes. Whichever compact camera you decide to go with, pocket sizes really don't have to be an issue.
