That is curious. It doesn't show nail marks, so not a dog. But it only shows three toes. Could it be a cat that is missing a toe...

Oh oh I got it, it's the first sign of a three toe sloth in New York.

Aren't they endangered? And it's outside of their normal range. All kidding aside, maybe submit the image to some wildlife authority in your area

I don't see a track at all. It's not a depression in the snow, it's the absence of snow. Same with all the little pock marks around it. With the debris and dark material in each opening, it looks like the snow simply melted faster, probably from activity.

I sent this shot to a biologist, and he thinks it is a black bear. We get deer in the yard all the time, and I have seen a black bear taken an entire bird feeder at a place a few miles from here.

Once upon a time there was a bear in the woods, and he decided he had to poop.

So, he found a nice spot, squatted, and began doing his business. Shortly after, a rabbit came along. He said:

"Mr. Bear, I need to poop too. May I poop next to you?"

"Sure", said the bear.

After a bit, the bear looks at the rabbit and says:

"Mind if I ask you a personal question?"

"Not at all", said the rabbit.

"Do you have trouble with poop sticking to your fur?"

"Why no." said the rabbit.

So the bear wiped his ass with the rabbit.
