Nikon Delving Through Archive - Nikon D40

Location
Seattle
Name
Andrew
There aren't a lot of examples from the Nikon D40 here; we don't even have a proper showcase thread. However, I've been scrubbing through my old archive. I owned this diminutive, some would say stripped-down, capable camera from 2007 to 2013. It was my first good camera, one which I could scarcely afford and which I treasured for that reason almost as much as for the excellent photos it took. I mostly have the RAWs on old disk media stashed away somewhere, so most of what I have on a hard drive are JPEGs. Still, some of them are pretty okay.

Only a couple of these are reworks from RAWs I found. The 6mp CCD sensor had really nice colors and contrast out of the box.

Here's a few, from circa 2008-2009

If I'm not mistaken, the D40 sported the same 6mp sensor as the D70. I took some of my most favorite photographs with the D70. At the time, I gifted D40s to two different folk. I believe they're still using them. Keep ISO under 400 and you're golden, under 640 and you're pretty safe. I'd be curious to see what Lightroom's or Topaz' Denoise could do with the higher ISO images.

The D40 was a fun little camera, one of my kids had one. I use to take it with me for events with the little Sigma 30mm f/1.4 glued on (not the DoF on the roof of the limo. I did use it a little with the manual AF (on the D40 anyway) Nikon AF 28-105D.

Great shots. What’s with the shipwreck?

Thank you for reminding me! The New Carissa, a fascinating tidbit of marine history from the little corner of Oregon where I lived for almost two decades:

The photo would be shortly before that remaining section of the ship was finally disposed of.

Oh man…that’s too bad it’s gone.

Good to see some other samples... let's keep it up!
