Darkroom Challenge Digital Darkroom Derby #214 - Closed and with results

Start Date
Jul 16, 2024
End Date

This is Digital Darkroom Derby #214, a digital image editing/processing challenge.

These challenges are open to everyone. If you have any interest in practicing or improving your image editing and post-processing skills, please feel free to join in!

Please read the rules here. Short version: Host provides the challenge image and selects the winner, who then becomes the next host.

A nice scene, taken at Lago di Braies in the Dolomites mountain range of Italy. This was taken with an OM System OM1 Mark ii. Its RAW files are not yet completely compatible with Apples software (Apples QuickView is not supported). I can view the files with XNView, FastRawConverter and GraphicConverter. I can open them in Photoshop but don't know if other programs can read them.

Entry #1:

What a beautiful image! A beautiful, peaceful mountain lake that just lends itself to a fair bit of post-processing to bring out the detail and colours.

For what it is worth, the OM-1 Mk II's raw files are supported by both DxO PureRAW 4 and the current version of Capture One Pro.

I adopted my usual procedure of:

Raw file -> DxO PureRAW 4 (Mainly for lens correction purposes) -> Capture One Pro (Straighten verticals, crop and a lot of selective masking to do some HDR corrections, Clarity, Contrast) -> JPEG file.

Great photo! Edited raw file in DxO PL7 then tweaked in Elements. Retracted original entry (I thought it was too "harsh") and replaced it with a B&W version of my 2nd entry (below) obtained by applying Nik Silver Efex (with orange filter) to it.

Sorry for all the problems accessing the files. However, on my side everything works, don't know what I could alter. Perhaps You should refresh the page a few times?
Your link "are here" at the beginning still is a problem, further down in Kens message the posted link is split and only the "are" works? Can you replace the link at the beginning?
Larry has just beat me to the punch.

@RobD and others: on my side everything works normally, the link “ are here” leads to the correct dropbox folders. Don’t understand all the problems. Later in the day I will try something different, but afterwards You guys need to flush Your links and history, otherwise the possibility exists that Your browser will reuse the faulty link.

Not a lot needed. A bit of texture boost, some Tone Equalization, a film-like curve, a little tint, some saturation/vibrance and a bit of contrast. I seldom will change the aspect ratio on a crop, but I cropped out a lot of the water as it was adding nothing to the image. I'm slowly getting my head wrapped around ART.

I need to do a better job of documenting my processing. ART will only display whatever tweaks made in that session. If you open and close an image, the process list is gone (the tweaks still there of course). I think this is a major shortcoming but the dev isn't interested (or capable?) of instantiating this. All you have are "snapshots" in the process tree.

Here is the process list for this image:

Another feature, which would have greatly helped me in these challenges, would be the option to make virtual copies. To try different process schemes to to speak. Again the dev isn't interested. I'm guessing I'll have to do this manually by making copies of the side card files.

Cheers,
