I'd only gone to photograph some trains but when this little chap posed so nicely I felt it would have been rude not to take his picture too!

I'm sure there must be a formula, but I don't know what it is! What I do know is a 300mm lens on the Nikon APSC sensor is 450mm. In Elements the sizing of the original image size was 50cm by 34cm but my "version" of the drastic crop ended up at 6cm by 4cm so approx. 8.5 times smaller. So Ken's calculation says I would have needed an 3,825 mm ff lens or a 2,550 APSC lens to get a decent shot. I think I could have spent £18k+ on a Nikon 800mm lens plus teleconverter then only needed a 2 times crop or got four times nearer and then crop. Neither was possible. So I could've not bothered taking the photo or used what I'd got with me and prayed editing would help.

When I posted the challenge I hadn't envisaged such a drastic crop of the image thinking that the location was sufficiently different, from a bird sitting on a branch or a fence, that it would provide an interesting background. However, most of you disagreed, and that is why I still love these competitions, because we all see something different in the same image.(y) Thank you all for your great entries and for daring to push the boundaries of today's technology! I was amazed at what you were able to achieve with such a drastic crop - so well done to you all!

My choice was hard as I could see merits in each of your entries but my top three are :-
Winner @gecko #2 - I like the colour, the level of sharpening, the bits of dodging from #1 and the more subdued background making the bird stand out
First runner up @Irene McC - I like the colour, the sharpening and the crop
Second runner up @Taneli - I like the colour of the robin, the B&W background, and the not so "drastic" crop

Congratulations, Rashid and over to you for the next challenge (y)

For completeness, my crop of how far I was prepared to go!

Wonderful work by everyone. Many thanks Ken. I'll do my best to find something to post for the next Challenge.
