Canon Dual pixel AF isn't cross-type

I understand it's quite reasonable given how DPAF works, but I can't imagine if the same technology with the same limitation is used on the EOS R, because in some cases I can tell an old fashioned hybrid AF on my late X-E3 works more predictable, on the Canon there seems to be no pin-point AF and the smallest AF box doesn't actually yield the most accurate results probably because it can't find enough horizontal contrast in it.
