The lake was partly iced over this morning and the geese had been sitting on the ice but eventually began to realize that it was starting to melt and that maybe they'd better move to safer ground:

Is that distinction ornithological or gastronomical?

They are classified as a pest further south, so I wouldn't be surprised if some made it onto the table, but I was talking in ornithological terms.
