Performing Arts Eskimo dance

A Russian academic dancer, teacher and choreographer came to the UofC in 2002 while studying the nature of Eskimo dance and music north of the arctic circle. He became acquainted with dancers, singers and musicians from Northern Canada who provided significant guidance for his study. A few of the Eskimos came to the UofC and helped him prepare and choreograph a dance performance. The drama department wardrobe group had to prepare a number of costumes that were sufficiently accurate in style, guided by the natives and photographs, to leave a good impression on the audience. In addition, the tech department had to make Eskimo style drums for the male and tambourines for the female dancers. Two or three of the performers, dancers/drummers, were native Inuit and are identified by their long black hair.

Apparently, the Russian academic study was well received in Russia the next academic year both by other academics as well as students of dance and history. It would have been nice to see other aspects of Greenland, Finnish, Russian etc dance.
