Were these actually taken at 1.4? Seems like a lot of stuff in focus and a pretty slow shutter speed to be wide open? Nice colors though on the lens and good shots.

The first 2 we’re at f/4 and the second 2 we’re taken at f/1.4.
I was losing the light so I was bracing myself against a tree.
When shooting wide open with a lens like that, what's your preferred method of focusing with the Z5 with the 'manual' lenses Brian?
I just bought the camera yesterday, and looked online for tricks. I have the "AF-ON" button programmed for 200% magnification. Easily reached, zoom-in, focus, hit the button again for full-frame. Will not work for moving skaters in the Dark! I also turned the focus peaking to max sensitivity- which comes close to the zoom-function. I am getting used to this camera. First new camera since buying my Df. If Nikon comes out with a FX (corrected) format Zf, I'm getting it! BUT- at under $1K for the Z5, the Nikon F3HP that I just sold paid for it.

Thanks, I was just checking, I also do focus peaking then 200% magnification on still subjects or just focus peaking if the subject's not still (when not pre focusing the lens). I'm looking forward to seeing how you get on with the camera.

"FX" (DX being APS-C) - but in essence, I couldn't agree more. Even now, the camera I enjoy most when using manual lenses is the Z fc. To be fair, the dedicated elegant Voigtländer lenses play a part in this, too.
However, for manual work, the Z 5 is basically *the* body to get: superb sensor (the D750's; I still love its RAW files), great EVF, bargain price. But I still hope that a) a Z f is coming and b) it'll have the Z 5's/Z 6's I.B.I.S. and EVF - because then, it'd be able to replace my Z 6. Fortunately, that camera does so well I'm in no hurry ...
FWIW, I use the video record button for magnification (I don't do video) when shooting manual. 100%, no focus peaking ...

Super Takumar 50mm F1.4/ Z6. I know most of us probably have this easily available and cheap lens but for those that havent; IF depth of field/ bokeh is primarily your thing, I would always advise to go for a classic adapted lens like this & mirrorless EVF setup over a rangefinder setup as the minimum 0.45m focusing distance of a lens like this gives it the clear advantage and is so damn easy to use.
Apologies for the cliched clothes peg shot, it was listed as a bugbear by a member here in 2016 and I totally get it; I am just posting here for demonstration purposes the wide open characteristics of the Super Takumar 50mm F1.4 wide open. You know, where MFD is applied, I've never seen in practical terms the difference between F1.4 and F1.2 at this focal length. Would love to out of interest though.

Clothes lines do have some advantages for DOF shots, as you can place items at a wide range of distances to suit your set-up. I can certainly see their benefits, but the background would be far too cluttered in either direction on the clothes line at home.

Try Fence Posts! I can convert every splinter into 0.01mm increments for shims by looking at my fencepost..

Much better for calibrating lenses.

With my f1.4, I have so much more DOF, I can get most of a baluster in focus. . .
And I can't even blur my clock's numerals into illegibility. . .
Guess I need faster glass.
