I want to improve my photography by studying paintings, but I don't know where to begin: the field is vast, I don't really know any names.

Does anyone happen to know any sort of blogs or feeds that would for example post a classical painting a day?

My focus is on the older eras and styles, not abstract postmodern necessarily.

For a painting a day I have an art calender every year with a good mixture of classic and modern (but in German). On the back of each painting is an excellent comment on the artist, epoch and this particular work of art (see attachment). There should be something like this in your language, too.
Often I go to websites of the museums and look for photo galleries like Musée d'Orsay: Exhibition videos .
But as to those periods of art that influenced my understanding of colours and composition the most I bought myself illustrated books of art of special epochs and styles. I'd love a www page with a classical painting a day, too.

I just made another check with one special epoch on google and found this:

Maybe "Lines and Colors" might suit you; I like it a lot as on top of showcasing art, it also adds bits of background info and analysis:
