Made it all the up to Cochiti Canyon on our first kayaking trip of this, our 18th season. Water levels were low due to ongoing drought, but we managed to navigate through some tricky places and against the current.
Sightings included Great Blue Herons, Canada Geese, Ravens, Turkey Vultures, Cormorants, Mallard and Teal ducks, Spotted Sandpipers, and for the first time ever on the river, a flock of colorful Avocets that were feeding on the mudbanks.
It was wonderful to experience the majesty, stillness, and spaciousness of the river after seven months of no paddling.
