Found a used - but looks new Nikon 55-200/4.5-5.6 VR II at the local camera store. AF-S motor in this lens is more amazing than I remember. Makes the S2 Pro feel way more premium than it did with the screw drive 28-70/3.5-4.5D.

Just a little backyard fun.
Processed RAW in Lightroom and then sharpened in Topaz Sharpen AI.

Monochromes processed in DxO filmpack 6 (mostly with the Ilford HP5 preset)
Color image processed in Nik Analog Efex Pro

Shot again with B/W mode, TONE = HARD, SHARP = HARD but this time at 3024 (6mp) resolution and the Nikon 18-70/3.5-4.5

A little tweak here and there with the Lightroom for exposure and this is what I got!

After shooting with the S2 Pro for a while, not only does the Super CCD do an excellent job for it's age...but I find that the whole experience of shooting with a minimalistic DSLR to be refreshing.

99% of what you need is a button on the camera body.
There is no video to have to deal with.
The ergos feel good and like they were designed by a photographer and not an electronics engineer (that was always what put me off of Sony and Panasonic as camera brands).
Menus are not overly complicated or filled with things you have to look up in a manual to understand.

It is very straight forward - you pick this thing up to do one thing and one thing only. Capture still images.

I'm still rather impressed with the amount of detail the sensor technology holds together.
The one weakness I see with it that is very obvious is when you are looking to push or pull exposure or shadows more than a stop. You can see color noise increase a lot as well as banding in the noise patterns. I can see why people like the Fuji Sn Pro series of cameras so much. Not sure I could have or would have stomached the asking price back in the early 2000's for one....but I can really appreciate how well this technology stands up even today.

I look at the sample images and some of them, I think would certainly rival my other APS-C cameras in certain aspects.
Even going back and looking at old images from my Nikon D50, I think the Super CCD technology was better at a lot of things than the CCD in the Nikon APS-C cameras.

If there was one thing that I would have wanted given what I know now...that would be to have Auto ISO.

What also is a factor, I'm sure is the amount of time RAW processors and AI technology have come and what they can do even with these 20+ year old technologies. Between the newer processing engines in Lightroom and CaptureOne (my 2 favs) and the Topaz Sharpen AI and Denoise AI...they make the final results as pleasing as the shooting experience.

I may have to look at some of the other, older Nikon f-mount bodies and see if there is anything there worth experimenting. I've always thought it might be fun to explore the D80 (has a 10mp CCD sensor) or perhaps some early flagship bodies that are basically being given away right now.
