Sony Focus tracking; sounds too good to be true....how does it perform?

I was reading about focus tracking. The way I understand it...you can focus on (for example) someone's eye, and then hit the center button (mode dial?) and then it will track that spot when you recompose or the subject moves.

Do i understand it and does it work well or is it a gimmick that just doesn't cut it in the real world?

It works pretty well. I don't know if its good enough to nail someone's eye, but you can use it to set focus on an object and recompose with the subject anywhere in the frame and it will maintain focus on that target. It's also not something I'd necessarily use for fast moving subjects, but it's worked well given the relatively non-demanding way I've used it. Works very well for keeping the subject in focus on very narrow DOF shots.
