Outback.... sigh

What they once were to what they have become.

Outback went private about 10 years ago (they were publicly traded), and to be kind the quality has declined since then.

There was a franchise in Eastern New Orleans that we were fervent fans of.

It was run by a woman named Darlene, and she knew how to run a restaurant. Excellent service, well prepared food, yadda, yadda, yadda.

Fast forward to now and they are a shadow of their former selves. LOML and I went to one in Northern Virginia about a year ago. I had a yen for a hamburger.

The first issue is they insist on cooking hamburgers well-done (thank you legal team) which makes the burger all but inedible. Combine that with the cold greasy French fries and is was complete fail.

Sorry Outback, to the curb you go!

For ever and ever, fish paste (anchovette) has been a firm favourite in South Africa. About 3 years ago it was discontinued due to -
apparently - dwindling sales. There was an uprising of angry consumers and finally one supermarket chain has got sole rights
to sell it again, in its original iconic glass jar. We are overjoyed!

Here is fishpaste on toasted ciabatta - pure heaven [cellphone pic]

Oh wow, that's a memory lane food for me, I loved it on buttered white bread with a squeeze of lemon. It's not fancy, but it's...well, it's not even probably that good, but now I want some!!

Confession time: I went on a road trip, ate out almost every meal, and until the final evening it didn't occur to me to take a single photo! So disappointing.

Anyhow, here was the final part of the last meal out - pistachio gelato (preceded by pulled-pork loaded fries).

Ditto.

Apart from the superb mini spring rolls in Glen Innes Swan Hill (the equal of the Flower Drum in Melbourne!), most of the food on our 6700 km trip was just edible ...
