Fuji From 2011 - I bring to you my first outing with the Fujifilm X-S1

Location
Central Ohio, USA
Name
Andrew
Back when this was released, I honestly pondered this and the Fuji X10. I got the X10 because it was more compact, cheaper, and from all accounts had a better lens. All those things are true, still.

But when I got a chance to get an inexpensive, near mint (and I mean that - I don't often use that term) X-S1 - I took the chance.

To say that I am impressed with the camera is an understatement. Is it as good as something like the Pentax MX-1 or Nikon P7800? No....but the X-S1 has something going for it that those 2 do not....a 24-624mm field of view!

I am experimenting still with the JPG engine. The default - I'm not a fan....they just look bad....artifacting, poor noise rendition...so these first shots are RAW processed in Lightroom and sharpened in Topaz Photo AI (just did an upscaling of 1.1x with a +40 on the sharpening). I tried sharpening in Lightroom and it seemed to do a poor job...showing similar artifacting as the in camera JPG processing.

I'll just pop some images out there and let you ponder what this $100 purchase has in value!

Nice series, Andrew. Cool camera, too. Rather shocking that it could pack that much zoom into a larger camera with the same sensor as the tiny X10.
I think my favorite is the one of the mural with the Cyclops eye... there's something about that image.
Congrats on what apparently is a fun camera ;)

Decided to really test the X-S1 today.

I wanted to shoot at the longer end of the focal length and at high ISO.
While it does lose some detail at higher ISO - I can use Topaz Photo AI and recover some really good images, even at ISO 3200!!

1 - monochrome is out of camera, then added some "grain" in Lightroom.

2 - high ISO shot in the shade. Aperture went to f/5.6 pretty quick. The next 2 shots were shot under similar lighting conditions.

3 - field of view on this one was roughly 450-475mm.

3b - this is the image (RAW) without any sharpening or noise reduction applied.

4 - full out to 624mm field of view

Wide angle, the lens is very sharp....get to 624mm and it does get less so, but not enough that Topaz Photo AI can't compensate. It also seems to be able to handle the high ISO as well.
Another note - stabilization seems to work very well...probably aided by the fact that we do not have a traditional shutter mechanism at play here.

Nice shots.

I have a second-hand X-S1 as well, and I think that, for its age and sensor size, it's very good indeed.
