The mesmerizing forms of frost flowers can be a bit confusing if one hasn't witnessed them before. The delicate, thread like crystals form beautiful flowers. Sometimes covering entire areas with their ethereal shapes.
Frost flowers form in cold temperatures, normally after some precipitation. Water seeps into the broken or cut stems of plants, commonly crownbeard, frostweed and ironweed. Then as the temperatures drop the water begins freezing. As the ice expands, it pushes its way out and up the broken stems. The crystals extend up and curl into delicate spirals or petals. Then as the sun rises and temperatures increase, the flowers simply melt away.
I have always wanted to shoot some frost flowers. I just was never in the right place and the right time, until this morning. These were all shot with the Leica Macro-Elmar-R 100 f/4 on the K1 in a local park.
