Fuji Fuji replacing the 18-55?

The next lens Fuji is launching looks like it would be replacement to the 18-55. Which really doesn’t need replacing. It will be a 16-55 r wr.

The 18-55 is a great little lens, and it reminded me a lot of the 12-45 in terms of build quality and size. The range isn't quite the same, but my experience of Fuji being 3:2 instead of 4:3 kinda makes up some of that by being a little wider. 16-50 would be really good too. Still close enough to hit the portrait range at the high end, but a little wider for landscape.

Since it doesn't have OIS, I wonder if this is an indicator that all of the future bodies will have IBIS. An XT40 with IBIS and the other innards of the X-S20 would be nice, although I'm not sure the new battery would fit.

This is in line with something my dad mentioned talking about this new lens. He believes it is replacing the current 18-55 for a new “kit lens” to resolve the higher resolutions of the new sensors. IBIS in the bodies instead of the lenses also fits with this.

Fuji really does need to get with the program and drop IBIS in all their models. The X-T30 line was one sore spot for sure. This long wait for the X-T40 might be right in line with your theory. It would sell really well, too. I bet it would just use the 26MP sensor, but that's more than good enough for that model.

Nothing wrong with the 26 MP sensor, especially for APS-C. I do wish they could make a better battery, however.
Is it the battery, or the efficiency of the camera? If it was just the battery, then third party options would solve that. As someone who shot the X-T3, it was surprising how fast the battery drained for a body that didn’t even have IBIS.

They could optimize the electronics, but the old battery is still only so powerful. The new one is physically larger. I’ve used the older one for years and I just keep a few extras on hand. I never gave it much thought until I used a body with the bigger battery. Funny how quickly we get spoiled.
