Fuji Fuji X100F & Square Framing

I've been shooting square format recently with the F, and finding it really works well within certain limits. But I've found that the camera only allows jpegs in the 1:1 format, not RAF, and that's quite limiting. I'm wondering if the later models, V and Vl, or even the Xpro line have this limitation?
Otherwise I have no issues with this camera, and don't feel limited by the fixed lens.

Thanks

I always reduce the size of my images before posting here with an app called Image Size. It allows me to specify the height and width, so if I say 1000 x 1000 for example, my image will be cropped and displayed as square. Whilst I always use JPEGs, I would think it may well work for you also. Give it a try, you have nothing to lose!

It's normal. It's what all camera's do* with a few exceptions where something else is going on in addition to cropping. Some raw conversion software honors the crop, others don't. The ones that do will allow you to uncrop. The raw file gives you access to the sensor data before converting to an image. Cropping takes place after the conversion (again, there's a few exceptions).

If you just choose a square crop on your converted raw file it will by default be in the center which will match the jpeg crop.

*That's been my experience, but I don't know everything.

I usually shoot raw+jpeg. I make all the settings, including the crop, that give me the look I'm going for. The jpeg captures all that as a reference. If I choose to work from the raw I can see in the jpeg what I was thinking at the time. I'm using Capture One so the raw has the film sim I used in the camera applied. None of the other settings are retained, but it's a good starting point.

I was curious to see what happens when you shoot a 1:1 image as RAW+jpeg and then open the RAW file with the built-in RAW converter (this is with an X100V). The answer is that the file opens as a full size 3:2 image, with no indication of the 1:1 crop.

Setting the camera to Raw+Jpeg is a brilliant solution and works! In LRC then the crop tool must be set to 1:1, and the image 'pulled' to center within the 1:1.
The only small issue remaining is the exported jpeg from this arrangement is quite small, 465kb for example, when jpegs not being constrained to 1:1 are set to 6-8 mb. Though except for printing that's an adequate size.

I haven’t used Lightroom in a long time so I don’t remember if the crop tool can also resize the image. Check to make sure you’re only cropping and not also downsizing. Then check and adjust your export settings. The default export choices for jpeg probably also downsize the file. I generally downsize to an appropriate size for the method of display. For internet use I’ll usually set the longest side to somewhere between 1600 to 2048 pixels depending on where it’s going. If the image looks good for its intended use, don’t worry about its file size.

Thanks again fredlong, much appreciated as this is my area of 'barren knowledge'. I do understand that mb loss due to cropping/resizing doesn't affect picture quality, so with a few more experiments I should have predictable results - Cheers!
