Thanks Amin. All from Ireland the B&W is Little Skellig which has a huge gannet colony. You can see the spot on left side little Skellig from the first shot which is Skellig Michael (site of a old offshore island based monastery) looking back to Little Skellig and the mainland. I'm am a fan of this lens despite some of the bashing it's taken on some forums. Interesting that the new 18-200 seems to be impressing those that have had early looks.

As for the lens getting bashed, I think we just live in a time where all lenses are pretty good, so we reviewers tend to pick on lenses for flaws which may make relatively little difference in use. There is also an unfortunate tendency to invest ego in gear, which is so silly, though many of us probably do this to one extent or another.
On balance, I think the Sony kit zoom is very good. It isn't the absolute sharpest at the edges, but it is sharp enough. It isn't the fastest to focus, but it is fast enough. It has nice bokeh rendering for a zoom, feels good in the hand, is compact - there's a lot to like. Distortion is a weakness, but not a factor in most shots and can be corrected when necessary. As I said, I've very much enjoyed using the NEX5 and this lens.

Amin and TEBnewyork, thanks for these! I was away and didn't notice this thread until now. Just seeing your two sets of photos with this lens is an eye opener to how a zoom can offer such different views. I have to admit that I like the idea of a zoom for photographing people - people one doesn't know, especially. But it's also excellent for your breathtaking landscapes, TEB, as well as that zoomed in closeup of the boat's prow.
So many cameras, lenses...but even more importantly, so many places and photographs to take and see!

I've been reading a lot about the Nex 5 and kt lenses and it seems that people both like it and don't. I've also been browsing pictures from it and in general they look pretty good. The dynamic range looks very good and of course so does the noise. The panorama feature looks very interesting to me. Anyone else want to chime in with additional impressions or evidence? The APS-C sensor keep trying to tug me away m4/3s.

I'm very impressed with the images from this camera. If I hadn't already bought an X1 I would be seriously looking at this. I find the APS-C sensor makes a real difference in the dynamic range capabilities of the camera.

Kathy I feel the same way as you! I'm almost ready to sell some stuff to buy one but there's a terrific amount of discussion around about the user interface and lens quality. Still on the fence but I think if you don't expect miracles it could be a great travel cam. The X1's field of view is not a natural for me and I'd like some choice.....

NEX 5 and 18 - 55 mm lens
Just got mine today and so far I'm very pleased with it Two pictures, one JPEG and the other from RAW. I'm quite happy with the JPEG but the RAW definitely has more detail. Not sure you can see that from these samples though so you'll just have to take my word for it! I traded in my Nikon stuff as I just can't see myself lugging it around anymore. I've kept my Nikkor 35mm 1.8 lens though as I want to try it out on the NEX. Oh, nearly forgot, noise is very pretty as it happens. Very fine grained and not noticeable up to about the 1200s on my screen. 00019-2 is from the RAW file.

Yes BB, I've now got two small cameras (one for each hand LOL)! I'll be off to Spain in a couple of days and incorporating a few days in Seville where I hope to put them both to the test. You can never rely on one camera for a trip , that's what I tell my husband anyway

Is the NEX3 much inferior to the NEX5
Here in Aus. the land of sunshine and big camera prices the NEX with twin lens kit is $999 a bargain looks like a promotion special atm.. this is a gorgeous little camera with beautiful lenses the bodies are a delight machined in aluminium.
I don't do VIDEO is the NEX3 much lacking compared to the NEX5 ???

The second is the one from RAW file. I'm really pleased with the output from the kit lens. It's not perfect but you can always add a better lens later. The menus are a bit fiddly but move along quite quickly with the scroll wheel. Once I remember where everything is located I don't think it will be a problem. I was very pleased with the few snaps I took in the garden yesterday. I'll be taking it to Spain with me today where there will be lots of sunshine so I'll be able to get out and use it! I believe that the NEX 3 is absolutely identical apart from the alloy body, video, remote cable. The only other thing is the grip itself. The NEX 5 has a shorter, deeper grip while the 3's is more shallow and long. Try them, I chose the 5 purely for the grip, I would've been quite happy with the 3

I must admit the images on this thread are better than reviews would have me believe. Looking good.
The differenced between the NEX3 and 5 are very minor. If you don't do video then there is no real reason to spend the extra......however....i still would but that's just me!!

Thanks for that info Christilou you summed it up very well, its just DPR comments refereed the menus as to not being ideal for an advanced user in terms of manual adjustments.
At the price point here in Aus NEX 3 @ $999 is a great deal.
The RAW image conversion has more "Zap" lively greens
