it seems to me we’re very far from what m43 used to be.

Or at least Panasonic is targeting a very specific user-group with this cam. I sort of get it with the 100-400 lens.

I checked Panasonics global website to check their marketing. To check what the plan is. No mention of the G9ii it seems Panasonic Holdings Corporation

The US site Panasonic North America | Create Today, Enrich Tomorrow Nothing either? I even used the search function.

The Dutch/Belgium site has at least the S5ii on the frontpage; Panasonic België | Informatie over al onze producten

Too early? Not for sale yet? Or, … no marketing plan?

Even with the 100-400, which I think they actually managed to shrink for v2, you don’t need this big of a body. I shot the 100-400 with the E-M1.3 before, and it actually was a little better because it seemingly took just enough weight away to notice.

I like this new Panasonic G9II and don't think it is THAT significantly bigger than other machines out there.

However the use of the S5 body make sense because the camera markets are not like they were several years ago so reusing the S5 body means they can get some improved AF and burst rate tech in there without having to create a new assembly line and make a new body plus is must also improve there over heads as well making the cost of the new camera to us, the consumer, a more attractive price point.

Another thing I'm quite excited to have in m43 now is the Real Time LUT function - I have quite a few .cube LUTS of film simulations I ripped from DxO Filmpack, being able to apply those to in camera jpegs and video will make certain workflows much easier.

I'm guessing it's going to use the same engine as the S5 II as well. If it was mentioned, I didn't see it in the reviews. It's certainly not a bad plan to reuse as much as they can across the line, there's clearly enough differentiation between the FF and M43 line in terms of cost and lens selection. As much as I wish the G9II was something smaller, it's still good to see Panasonic putting something new into the M43 line. This isn't even just a "throw the GH6 guts into the old G9 body" situation.

I hope it does really well. The GH6 does not appear to be well received, as it was getting some big price cuts not long after launch. Curious if they'll get a Mark II out soon, if only to apply the same low ISO DR fix to the sensor.

Maybe this is just as good as it gets. And the only way to get the business case working was indeed to ruthlessly reuse existing parts. Possibly the GH-series could even be phased out. If I understood correctly, the G9II surpasses the GH6 in video capabilities. I just hope there is a case to be made still for a smaller mu43 Panasonic. Like a G100 II.

I wonder how much of this trend towards larger rather than smaller mirrorless cameras is due to faster data movement and processing = more heat generated, and the need for bigger passive heatsink and/or airflow in the design? It's not a negligible consideration. A tiny, modern camera like the GRIII series has gotten some knocks for heating up during operation, but I think as we get faster processors and larger/higher-MP sensors, we run into physics...

I suspect the G9II has a video time limit so it doesn’t completely eat the GH6’s lunch. I think for straight up stills, this is overkill, unless you want to use that crazy high burst rate. Designs seem to be scaling up to these types of use cases.

The G9 II has unlimited recording, but it also has thermal cut off thresholds for when the camera heats up too much. A few preliminary tests show that the G9 II seems to record fine on a 21 degree day, but cuts off after about a hour on a 25 degree day, see Micro Four Nerds on YouTube. Apparently it has a large heat sink and is less prone to overheating due to the larger body size.

Just got an email from B&H for preorders, where you can save with a lens bundle. With the 12-35 2.8, or, rather strangely, both the 12-60 AND the 12-35. I don’t know why they’d pick that as a bundle option, since those lenses basically overlap.

I have the Gh6 and will get the G9II for wildlife. Don't be confused, the G9II is not in the same league as the Gh6 if you are a videographer. Not only the fan, but higher bit rates and tools for on screen filming analysis are key. BTW there is a setting on the Gh6 where you can set focus limits (both far and near, this only works when any limiter on the lenses is off), bet you have not seen this on any of the "reviews". I've attached a BIF (have other "proof of use" images). If you are needing to use shutter angle and other professional tools to match B/A roll cameras you need those tools. I expect the G9II (based on 6 years of use of the G9's) to be a extremely good wildlife imaging tool as well as a very good youtube video camera (Maybe a B or C roll for professional video). The most important thing to me is that both the G and Gh series are built like tanks and for me just keep on ticking.

You mount both lenses with an adapter and they do VERY effective sync-IS...

Agree. I have both and have had it for a while.

The only times I bring the 12-35 is if I am shooting "proper" dark settings or otherwise "need" the 2.8 all around, then it goes on the camera with its 35-100 stablemate in the bag. The Pana-Leica I happily take out on its own.

Neither have been used much since I got the Oly 12-45 f:4, to the tune of thinking of getting rid of the PL.

I'm really looking forward to this camera, despite the changes from the original G9 body design. The G9 II has standout video features like 4k 120p, v-log profile with 10bit colour, as well as phase detection which will be awesome for action photography. I prefer the G9 body design to the S5 from which the G9 II takes its body, but the S5 body is still fine.

I got mine g9ii last week from fotokoch düseldorf. I am trying to learn the menus. I had some trial shoots with sigma 56 mm 1.4. Silence shutter is active and others are automatic. I shoot from appx. 25 mt away. Please check the resolve power of the lens and the sensor. There is a colonge bottle in side the building on the table. You can read the name: GOLONYA This is leica mode. The other one is normal day time. (System is reducing the original size.You can also check my %100 screenshoot of the bootle)

Today I downloaded some sample RW2s of the G9M2 just to see what their workability was like. I must say, I was pretty darn impressed with the DR and detail, and that was pre-production samples. Even though the body is larger than I prefer, I'd really have to give this some consideration when prices start coming down. It should also only get better in time with firmware updates.

Any subject such as plays, concerts, sports. It why the Gh6 has a fan because there are a lot of situations where you need to keep rolling not to miss the decisive moment. I have both the Gh6 and G9II - and I had the G9 shooting in the 5.8K mode overheat after 10 minutes in direct sun.
