I had this little fear of asking people for their portraits. Finally I figured out there's this one cool and innocent excuse that opens many up: "I'm doing this school project". And I managed to shoot some people that way, until I personally concluded that while these are visually aesthetic, I'm not getting much out of the shots, not necessarily my style.
