GAS GAS: Please Share your Latest Desires Big and Small

@Matero My experience is that it's all but impossible to wean my wife away from her phone camera ...

During our recent long road trip, I eventually got her to use my E-M1 MkI plus 12-50 macro, and even a couple of shots using the 40-150R. At about day 19! She took some very nice photos, with a different perspective from mine (often better, but she is basically an artist, and I'm basically technically minded).

As soon as we got home, she's back to using her phone 100% of the time!

The point is, buy the D-Lux 8 for yourself. Don't get your hopes up about your wife using it ...

Fully agree, but optimistic I am, so give up I will not 😎

My wife has got different eye for photos, which is natural. Different experiences, different point of interest, different mind set. Not wanting to evaluate better or worse, it really doesn't matter. However I've managed to wake the understanding of qualitative aspects as well. She takes great pictures with her phone, and accepts that sometimes the real camera would have been better tool. But there's technology burden using Olympus OM-D E-M5.2 even though she has sentimental bond to the Olympus as a brand (first real (film) camera she got from the hosts of her exchange year in US back in the days)

I believe I can convince her switching to Leica now, after years 'education' from me 😂 See, the optimism

And, I'm more than happy to keep the Leica solely on my own, if proofed wrong 🙄

Well, that's stupid...

Apparently Leica removed the step zoom feature in order to "simplify" the D-LUX 8 to the "essentials." As macfilos points out, good luck ever hitting 28 or 35 or 50 precisely now. One of the first things I noticed about the LX100ii was how prone to overshooting the zoom lever was.

And when asked about adding back in the features via firmware update, Leica said "unlikely" because these were conscious design choices. Way to give a Leica answer to that question.

In pursuit of "pure" photography, D-LUX 8 users can now look forward to feathering the zoom lever as the primary tactile input for their otherwise retro-dial controlled camera. 🙄

Well at least you still get a camera that has 2 prime focal lengths: 24mm and 70mm :P

Well, Mike Evans is obviously taking a rather critical stance towards the camera. And he definitely makes some interesting points.
But, just to be contrarian... it still looks like a damn fun camera to me. What I would be curious to read - would be a review or field test of the camera by someone to whom the design-and-functionality choices either made more sense, or actually had positive interpretations.

Yes... in general, I think all of the tweaks Leica has made with this camera look very good. Which makes it all the more strange to take a very useful menu item out of the camera, when there is no reason the hardware shouldn't support it. It's not the end of the world, it's just irksome, more so for me because Leica seems to be using a really disingenuous argument to support the change.

The original LX100 was a camera I thought I’d love, but never did. I liked many of its features, but the slow startup time, the power zoom and the dust sucking nature of the latter killed my pleasure in using it.

Now with the GRIIIx I have no zoom and a fast startup time. The dust sucking is still there though…

I've seen that Harrison Cameras currently has the Olympus 40-150 2.8 for £1125 at the moment - which, if coupled with the current OM cashback offer, could mean a brand new lens for £825, barely higher than current used prices.

Reasons to buy
  • Going to India next March to tour national parks, and am in need of a bright tele for the trip.
  • Price seems an excellent deal - could add a used 1.4x TC and be about £1k all in
  • PanaLeica 50-200 is longer, but also nearly double the price and f/4 at the long end (plus Panasonic 1.4x TC is rare as horse eggs and also extortionate)
Reasons not to
  • The mid tele on the OM roadmap - could it be my holy grail, a 50-200 2.8?
  • I currently use a Panasonic G9 - so no Dual IS (though no lens IS in 40-150 anyway), nor any DfD optimisation
  • Not totally sure whether to double down on m43 anyway - though Nikon Z8 and lenses are likely out of reach financially for a while, unless my numbers come up 🙃
  • Currently getting pretty nice results out of my 14-140ii (however it's not that bright, and focussing probably better on the higher grade lenses)

That's a great deal. I paid more for mine used in excellent condition (which it was not but I kept it still). It's my favourite lens of all time, being extremely fast to focus, internal zooms is great and the built quality is fantastic, the weather sealing is like non other and I wouldn't stop shooting even if it was a monsoon. The minimum focus distance at 150mm makes it great for close ups and even 1:2 (half macro with 1.4x TC). I love the rendering at very close and close distance (at distances longer then 5 meters it can get a bit busy unfortunately). It's extremely sharp wide open on all the focal lengths but the 40mm end does have more CA (though it's reasonable easy to correct for).
If you don't have DFD (so I assume it's a Panasonic pre GX-8 camera then) it may not be great at focusing (or better then Pany 14-140mm Mark II). If it doesn't have IBIS either then I would recommend sticking with Panasonic lenses. Alternatively you could give Panasonic X 35-150mm f 2.8 a try ... Used it can be half the price or even less then that of that Oly offer, IF you go with the first version (which will do just fine on your older Pany camera). A matter of fact you could probably get Pany X 12-35mm f 2.8 and Pany X 35-100mm f 2.8 (both Mark I) for the same or less then the Oly offer.

Well, soon I hopefully can enlighten at least
my experiences 😎

I like it. I like it a lot. I did misunderstand my friend however. Although he was happy to let me shoot it, and as a press sample, remove images from it, I was not allowed to just go take it up to the wildlife refuge and have at it. At least not until the embargo date next month. So all the images I took came from around or at his home.

Being a Fuji shooter, I’m always surprised to see people using cameras that were just released. 🙄

The fridge's still full of unshot film (and some shot rolls too) and I'm wondering if I ever get through it all...
but come payday, here I am checking what's out there.

A box of ten rolls of Kentmere 400 for 65 €. Pushes easily to 1600, probably not a terrible choice for next winter's B&W stock?
On eBay I spotted a nice Portuguese store selling expired film. For example, 2 rolls of Superia 100 for 20 € shipped. Man do I love Superia.

Pentax 17 is kinda cool and all (not my thing though)

but how about a new batch of Ricoh GR1v cameras? Something with warranty? I'd buy one.

I went to B&H in NYC a few days ago, and they of course had one on display.

I played a bit with it to get a good idea of how the camera feels, I checked all the dials, the viewfinder, the lens and its zone focus system, etc...

Unfortunately I can't say I'm a big fan of it, I did not like it at all. The fact that you don't have manual control is just silly, on top of it I don't think is particularly a sexy camera either. (And this is coming from a Pentax user and advocate!)

I guess is just not for me!

...

Next to it they had the OM System OM-1 Mk II. It was my first interaction with it... Oh boy! From the moment I grabbed the camera it felt just perfect! The grip is perfectly designed and comfortable for my type of hands, the EVF is extremely nice and crisp! I found it to be a very nice camera indeed, my first impression was definitely positive.

What inspired me to jump into macro photography in the last few months have been mushrooms but also something even more special: moulds and slime.
Here are a few examples of really amazing works that makes me want to try it even more:

I am going to get 3 more little Light Cubes and 4 flexible mini tripods to control the light in dark environments in forests where it's humid environment for them. I am hoping to get a Raynox DCR 250 to increase magnification for such small subjects with my Frankenmacro setup.

I'm in a really bad state with my mental health and depression and I badly need something to focus and keep my busy both physically and mentally.

I'm in no rush to get one of these, but I was reading some film camera stuff on 35mmc.com the other day and was reminded of how much I liked the Konica C35 that I had, once upon a time. I think it was the first film camera I shot with since using some family 90's zoom compact or other as a teenager. I think the C35 model I had was the "v" which was a scale focus, automatic. Not much control, but nonetheless I remember the results being very nice, due in no small part to the excellent 38mm f2.8 Hexanon lens.

Since Konica has still largely flown under the radar for the film Renaissance (save for the Hexar RF and AF), C35 models are still cheap, but a survey of the landscape tells me that finding one with working shutter and electronics is getting more difficult. So, I think I'll keep surfing casually for a while and maybe pick up one of the rangefinder models, probably the C35 Automatic or the Flash Matic - which is kind of the same as the Automatic from what I can tell. The C35fd, or Auto S3, would be a more serious camera but also costs a lot more, and I don't want something serious for scratching this itch - an auto exposure RF that fits in a pocket sounds rather fun to have. Plus I love the way they look. Possibly the cutest small fixed lens rangefinder of that era.

Would love to team up with you at some point and join you on a photo walk? I have always found sharing info and techniques helps! And you can try my Raynox :)
