GAS GAS: Please Share your Latest Desires Big and Small

"Not suitable for use near overhead power cables ..."
Luckily we don’t have those in the Netherlands. It’s all in the ground. (Except for some high voltage masts, but those are very tall)

So I'm guessing, no drones allowed in your area, and he's found a crazy workaround?
Just checked our town website, drones are allowed. I guess one of the apartments is going to be sold, and they hired a photographer.
Not sure if drones a popular here, I never see or hear them. Maybe he is a bird watcher, and just trying his new gear 🤔 Should have just asked.

I'm hearing the call of the Sony RX1R II at the moment.
Let me tell you, it's been a tough few weeks. I've had that RX1R II in my shopping basket at least twice. I've consumed a few hours of YouTube on the matter, and read a good dozen blog posts. Talk about a waste of time!

But thankfully, I resisted. Gradually, the urge subsided. The RX1R II slowly transformed back from an obsession, back to just an old camera. It helped that I went out and shot some 35mm prime goodness on my Fuji, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. And then I did the unthinkable and switched lenses. You know, like you absolutely can not on the Sony. Little by little, this wore down the rose tint on my glasses.

But, oof, that was hard work. What is it about GAS that so allows it to hijack my brain?

I realized something on the way: I have no qualms whatsoever to buy happiness. A good bicycle will bring me joy every single time I ride it. My keyboard is a joy to type on. I instinctively know this, and do not hesitate buying this stuff. But a secondary camera will just complicate my life. That hesitation I felt, I should listen to that. It would represent novelty, but not joy. I don't think I'm wise enough to internalize that yet. Maybe some day...

As you mentioned in your last paragraph, I think novelty has a drug-like effect on some of our brains. I have 4 nice bikes of moderate value, but my antennae go up every time some bike company releases the latest hotness. I enjoy riding each of my bikes, and I am grateful to have them, but it still doesn't keep me from drooling over the newest super light e-bike that claims a 90 mile range. Likewise with cameras. The OM-3 is of no interest to me at all, but I keep mulling over whether I should snag one of OMDS's upgraded primes.

The backpack saga continues. I realised that the Lowepro Fastpack BP PRO 250 AWIII is just too bulky for what I feel comfortable wearing, it was too tall but also had too much depth. As I mentioned before there was very little difference between the PRO and non-PRO models when I had both, so even the non-PRO was too big externally.

I had another trawl and came across the K&F Beta Backpack 20L Urban Wander 01, which has side access plus a top compartment for personal stuff. It also has the option to remove the divider between the two sections. Best of all it is about £23 cheaper than the Lowepro once you apply all the Amazon discounts. It arrived today and it is a lot smaller than the Lowepro in both height and depth but has a similar sized camera compartment size to the Lowepro. Also, it is made from what feels like really durable material.

The Lowepro is boxed up ready to be shipped back tomorrow...

I have been stalking a Sigma 14-24 2.8 art for a few months. Watched all the videos online, read hundreds of reviews and dozens of articles all while waiting for it to go on sale again. However, I have also been eyeing the Sigma 14 1.4 art lately for a couple of hundred dollars more. Much faster lens, a manual aperture ring, tripod collar, and it sports a manual focus lock switch which I think helps set it apart. It doesn't have as many reviews but the ones that are out there are as good or better than the 14-24. The downside is that it's a fixed focal length and doesn't offer the versatility of the 14-24. However, I already have a Sigma 24-70 2.8, so I do have some limited 'range' on the wide side. Do I want to be able to cover 14-24 AND 24-70 or would I be happy with 14 and a 24-70. I also have the 70-200 and the 200-600 so If I got the 14-24 I'd have the full 14-600 range covered. How much would I really miss 15-23 if I opted for the 14 over the 14-24? Funny thing about zooms, I always seem to shoot them at their widest and tightest settings. That said, I'd still be able to shoot 14 and 24. Oh, and I have a Sony 20mm 1.8 so that would fill part of the hole.

Of course I suppose I could just get both.

I may do some northern light and milky way stuff once in a while, but I think I'd mostly use either of the lenses for landscape with dramatic foregrounds and some interior shots.

Maybe I need to buy another body. Any suggestions?

With a wide zoom, I tend to use it mostly on the wide end anyway so I lean more towards the wide prime.

And this is really the wrong place to ask if you should buy another body 🤣🤣🤣

No kidding. I currently have two (Z8 and Zf) and am seriously thinking about getting a third (second Zf). I mean, who wouldn’t want a 28 and 40 at their fingertips without the need of lens change? Attached to dual Zf’s, my favorite camera since the Pen-F (always wanted a second one of those, but never got to that). This solution (in a small bag like my Wotancraft Pilot 7L) creates kind of identical fixed lens cameras for city use, and leaves the Z8 (in a backpack stuffed with zooms and larger primes) to deal with the rest. It sounds logical in my head.

I know the feeling. It's the same for me with my Samsung NX500, I'm waiting for the delivery of a 2nd one (black one this time) because I want a 2 pocket camera set, one with 16mm f 2.4 and one with 30mm f 2 (or 45mm f 1.8 or even 60mm f 2.8 Macro if i know theres going to be flowers involved. Anyways, I will keep the OM-1 with the zooms and PRO primes in my Crumpler bag or backpack unless its raining or nighttime and I need IBIS.

PS: I’m going to need a bigger backpack.

I'm going to need a full time Sherpa 😛

Preferably this guy 😛

I like my Brevite. I saw one of their models on B&H's deal zone for a crazy price a few weeks back, almost bought a second one.

So a friend has asked me to help him get rid of some of his stuff which I have been doing for the last few months. He finally found the time to put aside his old Nikon D3000 and D300 to give them to me, I will probably put them on MPB at some point. BUT I have his approval to play with the D300 for a while before I sell it. What lenses should I try on the Nikon D300 ... nothing too expensive (unless I start liking it 😛 ) ... to play with for the next few weeks, maybe a couple of months?

Nikkor 16-85. Or the Nikkor 24-105. Both are very good, IME.

The NYA-EVO 50-C is on its way to solve that problem. My old F-Stop Guru was great for MFT, but bigger full frame lenses needed just a bit more space. Finding the right backpack for me is always a balance between enough storage capacity in relatively small bag, with functionality that is good for the outdoors and looks that work in the city. Hope this one works as good as I hope it will.

Okay, my story is told quickly: Today, I was able to handle the Fujifilm GFX100RF. I'm now officially infatuated with this camera - to have such a potent sensor (and great lens) in such a compact and light(!) body is nothing short of a dream come true.

The only two things preventing me from ordering one today: I don't have a lot of time for the appropriate kind of photography in the near future, and it's definitely time to make room for something new and with such high potential, so I have to consider what to sell/trade in. We'll see.

M.
