Micro 4/3 GX1 does high ISO - brilliant!

I went into town this evening to collect my wife from work and took the GX1, set it to shoot auto ISO and fitted my trusty 20mm to it - I am amazed and delighted with the results, they are in a very different league from anything the GF1 gave me and I would never ever shoot above 800 with the GF1 due to noise - no problem with the GX1.

looks a great camera, i had a gf1 but never found the shots that great i was always comparing them to the digilux 2 which was 6 years older but way ahead in IQ.I guess this camera is a step up then ! nice shots !

It appears to be a considerable improvement over the GF1 quality wise and I loved my GF1 and had it for 2yrs, now gone to a good home though!

The GX1 is a great performer and I have no regrets and do consider it an "Upgrade"

What is the max auto ISO setting on the GX1?

On the GF2 (and I think on the GH2 as well, if I remember correctly), it was 1600.

Hi Armanius,

The maximum ISO is 12800 so high, I have seen images shot up to 3200 and they are very good, 6400 is usable but not seen anything shot at 12800.

I would probably not shoot above 1600 and the quality is more than good enough for my needs.

So you can set the auto-ISO with a ceiling of 12800?

Thanks Armando & Ian for discussing this. You know, I'm probably in the minority but that'd almost be a deal breaker for me (I use my cameras on auto iso 90% of the time). On the X100 it's 3200 max and I already thought that was a bit weird, but 1600? I really don't understand why they have to put a ceiling on this.

PS: Ian I tried to visit "www.Ianskyphotosite.blogspot.com" a few times but my browser keeps crashing when I try to load your site (It looks like there are hundreds of images on one single page). Just to let you know as other visitors may experience the same problem.

Thanks Julien,

I use my GX1 at fixed ISO's but wanted to try the auto ISO and for me, 1600ISO is good enough and the quality is amazing - it is quick and easy to adjust ISO if needs be! I have used my X100 on auto and that is amazing but again I prefer to shoot with controlled ISO rather than let the camera do it for me.

I have had a few friends try my blogsite and they have got in without a problem, there are a lot of images in there but most are spread across different posts - have you tried getting into the X100 images on 571 Photography ?

I have also checked and tweaked the original blog so perhaps you wouldn't mind trying it again please?

Please let me know if there are problems with this site as well.

Thanks,
Ian

My understanding on auto ISO upper limits is that manufacturers don't want the auto setting to result in super noisy photos.

I use auto ISO quite often as well. I like cameras that allow for use of M mode with auto ISO.
