This will take some getting to grips with. You can have the AI feature on or off (I think I will favour off but we'll give it a chance!). 40mp or 10mp resolution. JPEG or DNG. Colour or mono (which is 20mp). Anyway, here are a couple of early shots.

Here's a few from this morning's dog walk. AI turned off for all of them - it produces a very saturated image for my liking (but then I'm not a 'grammer). I'm hoping they will tone this down in a firmware update sometime. Some of these scenes have not been shot for the first time here. I find myself getting more and more Hockneyish.

Basically, these smartphones are now the death knell of standalone cameras and lenses.

For 99.99% of the public the images produced by these things is more than sufficient. (and not just sufficient, but really excellent imagery)

I'm in my 60's, and since I was a teen I always made it a point to carry a camera with me. I was never without a good camera, it was a fetish. (but also got me some fantastic photos)

Since getting a Nexus 6p and a LG V20, I dropped bringing the cameras except when I had a definite purpose to photograph something where I needed a bit more firepower. The smartphones are perfectly good record keepers for things in my daily life.

I still like all the gear and gadgets, but I can't lug it all with me. On long trips, I now use M4/3 cameras, and I might soon drop those.

Except there is no snob appeal in toting a phone rather than a rare Leica M with an expensive lens and walking around Tokyo, for example.. :(:(

In layman's terms, apart from the price what is the difference between the P20 and the P20 Pro?
The P20 has a similar 2-lens set up (one colour, one mono) to the P9/P10. The Pro has 3 lenses, normal and telephoto colour plus mono. The 'normal' colour lens has a 1/1.7" 40mp sensor, which uses pixel binning to produce a 10mp image. With it having the telephoto lens you can go up to 3x optical zoom and 5x "hybrid zoom" which seems not bad at all. DXOMark rated the Pro at 109 (highest ever) and the P20 at 102 (3rd place). Apart from the camera differences, the screen is a little larger and AMOLED rather than LCD, the battery is bigger, and it's IP67 rated for waterproofing.

After I read about the P20 I admit I was impressed. But after reading a couple of reviews I ultimately decided to go with an iPhone 8 Plus. So far I’ve been very impressed with the photo and video .
