First thought went to roller bearings of some sort, but then your non-metallic answer threw me off.

My brain is having a difficult time understanding what this shiny material is if not metal.

Not a bearing. Those non-metallic parts do not rotate.
There is a blue luminance there, sligthly visible - consider it a clue

I have a vague idea of what this object might be (made of), so I just wanted to hint at it.
And @Zapp you are correct, I would have a hard time coming up with a new object to guess at.
@lucien I am not scheming, but I really should try to be on the look out for objects to use for this and take photos of them.

Yep

Those are kind of special: black IR 940nm LEDs, without the usual red glow, invisible when in operation. I've thought that the color will give some hint.
Here it is - panel with 48 LEDs, put in the headphone case for protection . The plan is to use them as the illumination for my old Sony DSC-H50, with hacked Night Vision feature.
