Idle curiosity -- Is there enough interest here in superzooms to have their own gear forum?

I've used superzooms from the beginning until May 2015, and although I'm on a prime lens mission now, will probably return to a superzoom in the near future. It's always interesting regardless.

Would you break tham down by over and under 1" sensors or by brands? While not a bad idea, I'm just trying to imagine how it would work.

That probably could work. I just thought it would be neat to have one place for find information about fixed-lens-zoom-cameras with at least 400mm (e) of reach. Let me do some more thinking about this.

Cheers, Jock

There are already forums for discussing superzoom cameras.

For the original superzoom cameras (and those that continue to use smaller sensors)...... https://www.photographerslounge.org/categories/54/

And for superzoom cameras with 1" (or larger.....though I don't think there are any larger (yet)) .... https://www.photographerslounge.org/categories/77/

and of course any threads that compare stuff across sensor size can go in the Open Gear talk..... Other Gear

I think the break down of fixed vs. Interchangeable lens couple with sensor size already makes an awful lot of forums. And it keeps the conversations relevant. Discussions about an FZ100 relate to a TZ3 as well. I think brand specificity for organization works well and for when people want to discuss and compare across brand lines, there's a place for that as well.

I went to the first one and there was no 'zoom' or 'superzoom' indicated. It looks like you would have to post into a lot of unrelated stuff if you wanted to focus on superzooms.

I'm in two (or perhaps three or four) minds about it. I think it would be good to have an all-superzoom thread, I don't think there's many people using them apart from us, so having a whole forum seems a bit silly. Maybe it could go in "Other" or something. Or, perhaps, in the images section which allows a bit more leeway.

I'm not a superzoom sorta guy so I don't have a particular axe to grind here other than to say that I have seen other forums fragment for perfectly sensible reasons and subsequently suffer for it. The more you build sub-forums the more people with specific interests stay in those areas and the less they contribute to and benefit from interacting with the wider community. Now I'm not sayin' that this would automatically happen here, but too much specialisation ain't necessarily a good thing in the long run.

I'd put everything over 300mm equivalent in one forum because I'd like to see all the options to photograph a bird from 50 yards away in one place regardless of sensor size or fixed/interchangeable.

Bill's concern is also shared by me.

But John's point is also solid. Although all of it is doable with the current set-up. I assume that no one missed the thread on superzoom size comparisons in the Watering Hole ..... Some interesting size comparisons -- superzooms vs. each other and vs. DSLRs

And maybe it's best served by being in the Open Gear Talk forum, but you get the idea. For the most part, if someone is interested in finding something, they'll find it.

I'll send Amin a pm about this to see what he thinks.

BTW, what's this about a lion roaming the streets of Milwaukee? And what kind of superzoom would be best to photograph said lion?

I was thinking about heading out with my Pentax and a 55-300 yesterday and patrolling through the hood to keep an eye out for the big cat (likely a cougar....not an African Lion like a lot of the bad Photoshops popping up all over social media). But my day was spent dealing with stupid real life stuff instead of hunting lions with my Pentax.

I assume you saw that little cell phone video clip. I find it strange and a little unsettling that people are making a joke of it. It's not like someone saw bigfoot. That thing would DESTROY a pet dog or cat in the yard. A 5 year old child could easily become a casualty.

Cougars have lived in Wisconsin for hundreds of years. More often than not, the DNR thinks that they are most often just passing through Wisconsin (hey everybody loves to vacation here), but it is possible there are a few full-time residents in the north woods.

I'm sure that cougar is LONG gone since there was only one cel phone video captured, but if you want to see other photos of lions in Wisconsin, there are some pretty good trail cam captures here...... Cougars in Wisconsin | Wisconsin DNR But for the most part, they're nocturnal and they don't care for the city so no lion photos from me.

Actually here's a couple from a few years back when our lion at the zoo had a few cubs......
