The way to think about color filters, they provide the least blockage of transmission of colors that are close to them on the color wheel, and block the most transmission of light on the opposite (often also known as the complementary) parts of the color wheel. In B&W this translates to the amount of luminance. Hence the dark gray of the blue sky.
 
A Medium Yellow filter cost just 1 F-Stop and is the most popular to Darken the sky. The Orange filter- 2 F-Stops and really brings out contrast. Red filter- 3 F-Stops.

Another advantage of the filters for use in B&W: Sharper images as softening due to chromatic aberration is greatly reduced.

Red filter on the Nikkor-HC 5cm F2 on the M Monochrom. I find you need a deeper filter with the Digital monochrome cameras than back in film days.
