In praise of the Toy filter

I mostly ignore these things. I just don't find them all that useful. Selective color got beaten to death by early-2000's wedding photographers (the wine glass / rose is in color, and nothing else is... magic). And the others are just kinda gimmicky and heavy-handed. But every once in awhile, I find that the Toy filter can actually be useful. I made an example this weekend on a beer pilgrimage for my 40th birthday.

Here's a shot of my beer glass with my usual settings, and no post:

It's perfectly serviceable, and could be punched up and vignetted to your heart's delight. But here's the Toy filter shot, straight out of camera:

Forgive me, but this is an entirely more compelling picture for its intended use. And I did nothing more than twist a dial. I kinda love this.

Velvia might also have done the job in this case.

Personally, I never use filters, because they do not save RAW files. Deal breaker.
