Leica Introduce Yourself...

Hello all, happy to stumble upon this forum. Got my started in photography thank to my 9th grade English teacher. At the start of the school year, she approched me and asked if I had any interest in taking pictures of the schools 1st home football game. My reply..... What? I have never taken a picture with a SLR before... after a total of about 2o minutes of "How to", 2 rolls of BW flim and a Canon AE-1 off I went.. Only to return the camera back to her after 4 quick years of high school ... Thank you Mrs Z... After have a few career changes - US Navy (10 years electronic tech), Robotics Tech (intall program) and the worst career chose for anyone to deside on Quality Engineer in the automotive industry ... I am now the Camera and photo equipment consultant for the largest priviatly owned consumer electronics and applinance store... ABT Electronics in Glenveiw IL. ( Why Shop Abt Electronics | Abt ). We became an authorized affilated Leica Dealer back in March of 2014. Be the only "sales person" who really ever hear of and understood what Leica stood for ... I very quickly became the Leica specialist.. We do sell the full range of leica cameras but deplay on the floor for the customer to freely pick up, hold and try the leica c , Dlux, Vlux, T, SL, AX, M and soon to be instock the Q......

So after be a little long winded, my point i am finally arriving upon, after on the average of selling 2 to 3 Dluxs a month I finally desided instead of telling others the value, I wanted to experiance the same. I purchased it 3 weeks ago and have had the camera with me pretty much 24/7.. One of the best investment I made...

Side note .. I do bring it to work each day... and where i tell the customer i purchased and then hand to them my leica, explain and show some of the benifits they are more like and have walked out with the Dlux over the rx100 or the G5X

Welcome to this place, Paul. We are a small group of friendly people who enjoy photography and chatting about it too. Your job is great to learn about. You can share with us your experiences in selling Leica cameras, and tell us about customers feedback and so on. Welcome.

Hello Everyone,

I am Abhi, another one of Amin's 'export' from MU43. I just acquired a mint X1 for a ridiculously low price and decided to dip my toes in the Leica waters. So far, I'm loving it! I had read plenty of negatives about the X1's slow AF (and it is slow), low res LCD etc. But maybe because of that I was pleasantly surprised that it's not that bad at all...even in dim light indoors. The straight out of the camera JPGs in B/W are stunning. So far our cat has been a very patient model. Hoping to pick some ideas from experienced Leica shooters here.

I have a few pages of X1 photos, shot as JPEG only, on my 'dalethorn' website. I probably got more good images from the X1 than any digital camera I've owned, although that will probably be surpassed eventually by my Leica Q. There are great upgrade paths within Leica from the X1, just be careful if you go to a rangefinder that you're fully informed.

Edit: That's a darn good shot for a first test.

Welcome to Leicaplace- M9 prices are coming down, and the M8 is ~$1000 these days. Prices of Leica film cameras, also reasonable these days. It sounds like you are curious to try an RF, there are options.

Hi there, I'm Paul.

I'm a long-time film user but definitely not anti-digital. I shoot with a variety of formats from 5x4, 120 and 35mm. My Leica gear comprises an M6 (Titanium) and a black M7, together with 28mm Elmarit-M, 35mm, 50mm and 90mm Summicrons. Nice - but nothing esoteric.

My interest is in using the cameras I own, rather than collecting or investing in them. Having seen some of the output from the M240 and M246, one of either of those models is (currently) top of my aquisition list - but I'll have to wait for a small lottery win before that's likely to happen.

I live in Essex and work in London (though I'm from the NW of England, originally). My favourite subjects with a Leica in my hand are travel and street, though I'm findiong them remarkably and unexpectedly good when it comes to impromptu 35mm landscape work as well.

I don't profess to know much about Leicas and, in fact, I've owned a couple of others down the years - and traded them - primarily because I'm clumsy and found the film loading / unloading mechanism a bit of a pain - compared to SLR type. However, as a mid-50s year old, I no longer want to lug 15-20kg bag-loads of SLRs / f2.8 lenses around everywhere I go and 1/2 M bodies and a couple of small primes has an increasing appeal.

Anyway, nice to meet you....

Welcome. It sounds like you have a nice set-up..I think you will find the people here welcoming, encouraging, and repositories of sorts of valuable information. I don't have a rangefinder body, Leica or otherwise, to use my LTM lenses on, so I'm using them via an adapter on a Fuji XPro 1 and getting some good results. I do miss my Leica IIIb and my Bessa R, though. If a Leica digital body is out of reach, you might try one of the "rangefinder style" digitals bodies by another manufacturer. You won't get Leica jpegs, but the lenses will carry their signature look to another brand. There are only a couple of sensor makers around anyway. The focusing would not be rangefinder, though, a definite disadvantage to going that route. Many here have long film histories, so you should feel right at home.

Anyway, welcome again.

Hi Lawrence, thanks for the response. I've also got an X-Pro1 and a Metabones adapter so I can mount the Leica Lenses. I haven't really had a go with it yet but I intend doing so next time I'm out and about. I like the Fuji and hope, as you say, the Leica glass is as good on digi as it is on film! All the best. Paul.

Hi, all. I recently got the D-Lux Type 109 and was so impressed with it that I made the mistake of reading about some of the other Leicas. Last week, my brand new X Vario arrived. The internet is indeed a dangerous place. Here's a selfie I took on Day 1 with the new X Vario. I'm sure I'll learn a lot by reading your posts and looking at your shots.

Yes, titanium lenses are rare indeed, and quite beyond my budget! I'm the second owner of mine (I bought it in Washington DC), and though operationally perfect, it's in definitely "user" condition, something you don't see often in a titanium model. A long story, but I found out the previous owner purchased the camera new in London and was a photojournalist with Contact Press Images which explains the scratches and dents (yes, dents plural). Here's a view of it, but it doesn't display its true wear:

Worn lettering and scratches/small dents top and bottom; but it works well and I love it!

Cheers, Allan
