The best way is not to turn the knob until the IMAGE is sharp, but until the information numbers and technical graphics are sharp in the viewfinder
(the aperture, shutter speed, etc - that sort of stuff)
For me the best way always is to take a newspaper and my best lens (1.8/75), look through the viewfinder without my spectacles on (I've only got +2.8 dioptries) and turn the knob till the smallest letters are sharp.

When peering out through the viewfinder at your subject, ask them to peer back in the other direction to see if all the little blood vessels at the back of your eye are nicely in focus (will not work for electronic viewfinders) (or optical ones, to be honest).
