Leica Jupiter-3+ and 1943 Carl Zeiss Jena 5cm F1.5 Sonnar T

Brian

Product of the Fifties
An informal comparison between the new Lomography Jupiter-3+ and a wartime CZJ 5cm F1.5 Sonnar "T" in Leica mount at the Manassas Battlefield.

Manassas National Battlefield Park (U.S. National Park Service)

Notice that there none of the pictures have any people in them... It was very cold and windy, too cold for a Tripod. I walked around with the Jupiter-3+ and then made a second round with the Sonnar. Shot each at F1.5 and F4. Most -not all- F1.5 shots are at ISO 80, 1-stop pull on the M9. The glass on the 1943 Sonnar is perfect, I rebuilt this lens. Both lenses used with UV filters and a Hood.

Similar shots, not the same between the two lenses. Again- cold and windy, and done quickly.

The original Jupiter-3 is based on the wartime Sonnar, which has an improved optical prescription compared with the pre-war Sonnars. All of the wartime Sonnars are fully coated, and use an allow barrel and focus mount. The mount itself is fragile compared with the Jupiter-3. But- it is made to the Leica standard and will focus correctly across the entire distance range. They are rare, and one in this condition now costs more than the Jupiter-3+.
