It was barely daylight this morning as I pulled off the road to begin my waterfall trek along Laurel Creek in Fayette County, WV. Laurel Creek is one of many streams that tumble off the steep slopes of the New River Gorge, and is a favorite because of the challenge it represents. Scaling the walls of the canyon is no easy task under ideal conditions, and several hours of freezing rain had left everything covered with a sheen of rime ice. I considered abandoning the venture, but decided to press on. Working my way upstream, I managed to cover 3 major drops over a span of a mile and a half without slipping and breaking something (like me). A hiking pole with a steel spike helped a lot. I had to descend, ascend, walk a ways, then descend again the rocky slopes to get all of the images I wanted, but here they are, starting downstream and working upward. X-E1 + Rokkor 24mm/2.8.
