I currently make a point of it with all the old 50mm lenses - I didn't realise the extent to which they render all so differently which for me is something to embrace.

Leica Showcase Leica 50mm f/2 Summar

The Summar was designed as a cheaper (and faster) follow-up for the 50mm f/2.5 Hektor (my personal favorite). And Leitz had to make some concessions to the overall performance in order to achieve that.
It makes the Summar a neutral to a warm lens and seems to do some weird things like capturing little shadow detail. that give it that 'Leica Glow' and an interesting 3D pop that some people seem to like.
The Summitar was designed to improve on the Summar, but is cooler neutral lens in comparison, and has better overall performance at the larger apertures.
I have yet to try an early Summicron to compare with the rest of these lenses.
