Leica Leica Hektor 135 F4.5, M-Mount

Brian

Product of the Fifties
This lens often gets overlooked. Long, and slow. Close-Focus is about 4.5ft, with a 2.7x magnification- this lens can get in close. This lens is a long-focal length lens, but is an Anastigmat- not a telephoto design. This makes it a very long lens for a 135 Focal Length. It is a more simple design than most telephoto lenses, and is quite good on the M9.

All wide-open, and 4.5ft~5ft. Used with a Hood and UV filter.

Some vignetting- might be the Nikkor filter on it.

It's not a heavy lens, less weight than a Nikkor 135/3.5. Compared with my Df with the 70~180 Micro-Nikkor-Zoom, it's small and light.

Need I say what this looks like? Yes, compared to your SLR lenses, no comparison. But still a bit unwieldy.

The same lens hood that I used yesterday!

I'll put up a show of a few 135's. The Hektor is long- my 200/4.5 Komura LTM is about the same length. I used a 400/4.6 Tele-Astranar in High School days. Just used to long lenses.

Telephoto perception....or "reach"...is common in the slr community but relatively rare with rf'rs. Seems that reach is not adaptive to the dominant style...or street documentary, where you want or are forced to e "close". Intimacy has been taught as desirable. Street photography with a tele is voyueristic in this school. I notice that looking through the finder with a 50 attached, I have a sense of what is being photographed. No such vision is easily intuited with a long lens as it is on a slr, where it's straightforward. I like the idea of teles and would like to try.

Nice pictures

135's have been around for Rangefinders since the Leica C of 1930. David Douglas Duncan used the Nikkor 13.5cm F4 with his Leica IIIc. It's a great focal length. I shot with a Canon 100/2 for most of the day, took Nikki skating. Will be posting some shots soon. I find it very easy to use the M9 and M Monochrom to focus an RF, easier than using a fast telephoto on the Df.

Well....you get the angle of view and the magnification using live view. All I would get is a teeny image and squinty framelines

Hektor 135/4.5, Canon 135/3.5 (late), and Nikkor 13.5cm F3.5. The Canon and Nikkor are the same length, wider optics on the Canon. The Nikkor is heavy brass, Canon is lighter.

I'd like to see more pics, if possible from the canon....which might be a good choice for me.

The Canon 135 looks a potential winner for me. I saw Ken Rockwell's review of the Hektor and Elmar 135's.. He much preferred the sharp field of the Elmar. I have no frame of reference although the ELmar is more expensive. Neither are exorbitant. The Canon in later serial numbers like yours are kind of all over the map with asking prices....but 100$ should be the limit...I think. It does not have to be perfect. A Canon 100 would be too much like my tele Elmarit 90 2.8.

Your daughter is having a very good time.

I started a thread for the Canon 135/3.5 Shown here:

Canon 135 F3.5, Late version

Shots are all wide-open. Focusing the 135 at F3.5 is easier than focusing the Canon 100/2 wide-open, especially for a moving subject...

My daughter is wearing the latest in Rangefinder Focus Assist Clothing.

Hey - now there's an idea I can relate to - focus-assist clothing.

I guess it does not make sense to evaluate Jupiter 11 when there are reasonably priced Leica, Canon, and Nikon alternatives available.
