Introducing the Leica Q (Typ 116)
Today, Leica Camera has announced the new Leica Q (Typ 116). The Leica Q is a full-frame, 24 megapixel digital camera with a fixed, 28mm f/1.7 Summilux lens sporting ultra-fast auto focus and full macro capability.

Made in Germany, the Leica Q is jam-packed with advanced features including a rear touch screen display, built-in super high-resolution 3.68 megapixel EVF, Wi-Fi connectivity, optical image stabilization, an electronic shutter for speeds up to 1/16,000th of a second, and even a traditional focusing tab to allow for full-time manual focus when desired (with focus peaking of course). Designed for speed and quick operation, the Q will shoot up to 10 frames per second to capture even the fastest changing scenes.

I wonder why anyone would buy an M246 knowing that the Next Generation M is going to use this sensor, or one that is even better.
 
There is always one that is even better. The NEXT Monochrom is three years out, so if a Monochrom is what you want, there are only two choices and won't like be a third for some time.
 
From what I have seen- for image quality, the M246 does not show a 3-year improvement over the M Monochrom. Makes it much easier to skip the current generation and stick with the M9/M Monochrom. I hope Leica puts 14-bit mode back into the firmware, I suspect that crippled it in Erwin Puts' tests.

They are packing the 14-bit pixels using only 14-bits. The M9 and M Monochrom use 16-bits to store the 14-bits. Which made it easier for my software to add the Gamma curve and use all 16-bits. But that's Okay! Just need an extra few lines of code.
 
Watching him handle the camera, continuously turning it around and around, and with his comments about it being somewhat "light but solid", it definitely impresses as a compact camera. And now all I need is a compact snug case a la the 18709 for the X1, and it will be mine.
 
Given that the processor is back to using "Little Endian"- that typically means that the architecture of the chip is fundamentally different.

The top shutter speed is 1/2000th of a second, is this a leaflet shutter? That might also explain why a 28mm lens is used instead of a 35 or a 50. A leaflet shutter must open up at once, is not a traveling slit. Large diameter lenses means the leaflet shutter must open to a larger size, more travel- hard to do with a fast-fifty. A 28mm F1.7 lens means opening to "about" 10mm or so, depending on the exact formula of the lens and the degree that the cone of light is concentrated.

The name of the manufacturer is not being tossed around like it was with CMOSIS. So I doubt it was them.
 
So then the question is - who developed it and the new processor. It is not CMOSIS. Not Dalsa, they are CCD oriented.

I hope it was Samsung.

Does Sony use Big-Endian or Little-Endian for their cameras?
 
Brian, do you think this new sensor was selected b/c the Q has a leaf shutter and if so do you think it will also be in the next M body? I've done a little research on leaf shutters, as I was considering a Mamiya 7 at one point, but I wasn't aware that a leaf shutter required a different type of sensor for digital bodies (until you posted above).
 
I think the 28mm focal length lens has an advantage where a leaflet shutter is concerned- the shutter does not have to be as big as it would for a 50mm lens.

for the sensor- I would love to see the technical specifications; it must have lower noise to do so well with High ISO. Used with a matched 28mm lens: the microlens and pixels can be tailored to the lens.

Some of the newer CMOS and Back-Side -Illuminated sensors being offered from Sony and Samsung are amazing. The next M will need to at least match the Q116 for High-ISo and Noise. More megapixels? 32MPixels is pushing the resolution of most lenses, smaller pixels mean less material for collecting light. 24MPixels is practical; but since when was digital about being practical?
