AFFLUENCE + NEGLIGENCE => RECKLESS ABANDONMENT

... pun intended ...

It's hardly better here in Switzerland, to be honest. My neighbours buy new balls instead of going to look for the ones their little boy kicked into the shrubbery ...

I believe you've hit the nail on the head there. Here people are frugal due to dire necessity.
There is plenty garbage thrown around everywhere (horrible, in fact) but anything usable is immediately snapped up.
While travelling in Europe we were touched and surprised by the items of clothing found on park railings etc waiting to be collected by their rightful owners.
Not so here.... gone in a flash (and more frequently at gun point, but that's a different story again)

You are the King of Lost and Found @wee-pics  I don't know where you live, but people in your area seem to be particularly prone to leaving things behind !
I grew up in a time (after WW2) when we had little and that little was well-kept and well preserved. Maybe that's the reason why this negative aspect of affluent society (affluent only for the upper third) hits my eyes and fills me with anger wherever I roam.

Exactly - my late father lived through two depressions as well as WWII and I was brought up to respect what we had.
