Maine Cabin Weekend

This weekend a big group of friends organized a weekend up north in a huge rented cabin to celebrate someone's birthday. One of the guests was a friend of friends who is a professional photographer, and a good one, so I was excited / intimidated. I'm at that stage where I am "professional curious" I guess you'd call it, where I am beyond basic community college classes, and really need to shadow pros to keep getting better. She's wonderful, and humors me, and I've been careful not to hound her to death. Mostly I shut up and watch. I haven't seen her shots yet, but mine are posted to facebook where everyone could see them, so I'm really anxious to see what she posts. Mostly I didn't think about it much, and just did my thing. Such a great weekend. Camera was all the XT1, and lenses were a pretty even mix of 18-55 (mostly outdoors during the day), 35 f1.4 and 56 f1.2.

Another friend's daughter. The 56 is a staggeringly, frighteningly good piece of glass... look at her eyelashes on the full-size file on flickr

The 56 indoors at night makes everything sooooo much easier.

Man, Kyle, you get to do cool stuff. Your photographer friend's choice of gear reminds me of how I got by with a 100% manual Minolta SRT-200 with a lone 50mm f/2.0 Rokkor-X lens for something like five years in the 1970s. It can be done.

The pro's photos are up. And they are indeed humbling. It's awesome to get an experience like this... you're in the same place, same time, same everything. You brought whatever gear you're most comfortable with, so did she. You both have families, and you are trying to balance being present with taking the best shots you can manage. So seeing how many better MOMENTS she got, and how she got them is... so incredibly educational. I did ok, but she ate my lunch for sure. It's fantastic. Man is she good.

Have a look. I'm the guy with an XT1 slung around him and a beer in his hand.

If it helps, I'm envious too but having said that I like yours also. All the kid pics and the cabin, the skier, the laughing lady. These are all personal to you and record a happy time:D

Yes, her shots are indeed very well done and have a nice flow to them as they are all treated with the same PP; but don't sell yourself short. Your shots are very good and you captured some nice moments as well.

I hate being the "guy with the camera" at social gatherings so I no longer bring one, but it would be good to be able to take more people shots like yours and hers for the sake of record keeping.
