Me, my new X-E1 and my Cichlids

Hi, I'm pretty much new to photography as you see but I enjoy very much the combination of fish keeping and pics.
Any tips will be appreciated.
I am using no flash in most the pics as for the glare and the fact that I only have the built in one.
(The flash makes the deep colors disappear).
The best pics are the ones that have a dark background, how it's done I have no idea.

Welcome to this forum and congratulations with your new camera.
It's also nice to see some shots of fish.
thanks for sharing and enjoy your time here.
Peter

Sorry for my ignorance but what is it?

Regards,
Mister Bliss

It's a rotating filter you screw in in front of your lens that gets rid of the glare or reflections on the water. When you are looking at your subjects (the fish) slowly turn the CPL (circular polariser), and as you turn the CPL you will notice that the glare on the water will diminish if not completely disappear.

Thanks but what about the glare from the flash? What flash would u recommend ? And how to keep color when using it.
Thanx

Regards,
Mister Bliss

Sorry mate, you got me there, I don't shoot with a flash, I'm just talking about the glare on normal lighting conditions or from the natural light.

As for colour, the dark background brings out the subject's colour due to the contrast between the darkness and colour. You can also increase the saturation in your camera to boost your colour.

Yes, that is a circular polariser, but before you buy anything, I reckon it's best to first understand the fundamentals regarding taking photos of fish in an aquarium.

This youtube vid goes through some basic methods of taking photos fish in an aquarium, he is using a DSLR but the concept is the same just a different type of camera.

Alternatively this website goes through the settings used when taking the photo, I especially found the tips on this website quite useful if you are just starting off learning taking photos of fish in an aquarium. Again the cameras they used are DSLRs, but again, it's the technique and the method you are after as long as you can apply it to any other camera then there shouldn't be any problem.

Happy shooting ;)

I love fish shots as well. You cichlids are quite handsome. A few of your photos are a bit overexposed. Properly exposing (or even underexposing a bit) will bring out deep rich colors (as well as darken your background). Try some exposure bracketing.... or just dial down the exposure compensation dial until you get the results you want. You can't use flash through your aquarium glass (and you'd freak your fish out anyways). Also keep in mind that the lighting chnages quite a bit on different parts of the aquarium. Experiment with moving your light (if it's possible). The closer you can it to the front of the aquarium will also help to darken the background.
