So,
I'm getting resettled after the move and thought I would do a calibration on my monitors. I've got two fairly old HP Pavillion 23cw IPS monitors and an ASUS VS228.
One of the HP's is permanently connected to my Win10 box which has an NVidia Quadro P1000 display card. The other monitor is connected to a TESmart KVM to the same card with one side going to the Win10 box and the other an Elementary OS Linux bix.
The ASUS VS228 is permanently hooked up to the Elementary OS box as the primary display driven from an AMD Radeon HD8570 display card with the other output port of the EOS box is connected to the KVM and shares the HP 23cw.
I've got a fairly old Datacolor Spyder5Pro calibration gizmo.
On the Windows box I'm running SpyderPro5.5 software (the latest) as the most up to date version of DisplayCAL does not connect to the sensor.
On the EOS box, I'm running DisplayCAL.
The NVidia software on the Windows box shows that both monitors have the same color settings.
Running through the calibration procedure on the Win10 box on the monitor connected to the KVM is spot on, literally out of the box in terms of manual adjustments. The other monitor requires extensive fiddling with the controls to get it in the middle of the tolerance box.
Finishing up the calibration and applying the curves to the monitors, the one not connected to the KVM is significantly less vibrant and darker than the one connected to the KVM. For fun I apply the profile from the KVM monitor to the non-KVM monitor and set the settings on the monitors themselves the same, and the displays are virtually identical.
Any idea why the two were different?
Doing a cal on the EOS with DisplayCAL, without physically adjusting the KVM monitor results in a closely matched display. Not identical, but I wasn't expecting that from two different monitor types.
Oh, and I'm sure all this shows that I know less than nothing about color management.
