Sony Moving to Sony (from Fuji X)

AndyMcD

All-Pro
I have had the Sony A7 for a bit longer than a week, but only had a couple of old manual lenses to try on it, and frankly the results were not great. I traded in my remaining Fuji kit and picked up three lenses plus a converter and they all turned up this afternoon - luckily on my afternoon off.

First up - Laowa 12mm/2.8 Nikon AI fit on a K&F straight through adapter (cropped to 16:9 but full width)

Next couple are the Laowa 12mm f/2.8 on the Laowa Magic Shift Adapter (great name!) with upward shift. This adapter acts like a TC and changes the effective focal length and aperture to make this lens into a 17mm f/4.

Next two are using the Sony 20mm f/1.8 G - I was amazed when I spotted that some Sony lenses have aperture rings. This one will be my normal walkaround I expect (I favoured the Fuji 16mm f/1.4 before I switched)

These two are with the final lens in my new setup is the Samyang AF 75mm f/1.8. I wanted something a little longer and this one was a bargain - even better, I have it set to use the focus ring to control the aperture:

These last two compare a view taken using the Sony 20mm versus the Laowa using the Shift adapter.

This is cropped in somewhat to show how I would have handled this previously:

Day two, my other stomping ground (Keyworth) this time with just the Sony FE 20mm f/1.8 and the Laowa 12mm f/2.8 on the Magic Shift Converter

Well done on these excellent images, you seem to get along well with the Sony a7 (Mark I, I'm guessing).

There are quite a few lenses with aperture ring for Sony FE:

*Sony FE 16-35mm f 2.8 GM II
*Sony FE 24-70mm f 2.8 GM II
*Sony FE 70-200mm f 2.8 GM OSS II

*Sony FE 16-35mm f 4 G PZ
*Sony FE 20-70mm f 4 G

*Sony FE 14mm f 1.8 GM
*Sony FE 24mm f 1.4 GM
*Sony FE 35mm f 1.4 GM
*Sony FE 50mm f 1.2 GM
*Sony FE 50mm f 1.4 GM
*Sony FE 85mm f 1.4 GM
*Sony FE 100mm f 2.8 STF OSS GM
*Sony FE 135mm f 1.8 GM

Sony FE 35mm f 1.4 ZA Distagon T
Sony FE 50mm f 1.4 ZA Plannar T

*Sony FE 20mm f 1.8 G
*Sony FE 24mm f 2.8 G
*Sony FE 40mm f 2.5 G
*Sony FE 50mm f 2.8 G

There are third party lenses with aperture rings as well:

*Sigma 14mm f 1.4 DG DN Art
*Sigma 20mm f 1.4 DG DN Art
*Sigma 24mm f 1.4 DG DN Art
*Sigma 35mm f 1.2 DG DN Art
*Sigma 35mm f 1.4 DG DN Art
*Sigma 50mm f 1.4 DG DN Art
*Sigma 85mm f 1.4 DG DN Art
*Sigma 105mm f 2.8 DG DN Macro Art

*Sigma 14mm f 4 DG DN Contemporary
*Sigma 20mm f 2 DG DN Contemporary
*Sigma 24mm f 2 DG DN Contemporary
*Sigma 24mm f 3.5 DG DN Contemporary
*Sigma 35mm f 2 DG DN Contemporary
*Sigma 45mm f 2.8 DG DN Contemporary
*Sigma 50mm f 2 DG DN Contemporary
*Sigma 65mm f 2 DG DN Contemporary
*Sigma 90mm f 2.8 DG DN Contemporary

Samyang let's you use the manual focus ring as an aperture ring when in AF-S and AF-C mode, you will need the Samayang USB dock to do that with any of the AF lenses:
*AF 14mm f 2.8
*AF 18mm f 2.8
*AF 24mm f 1.8
*AF 24mm f 2.8
*AF 35mm f 1.4 Mark I and II
*AF 35mm f 1.8
*AF 35mm f 2.8
*AF 45mm f 1.8
*AF 50mm f 1.3 Mark I and II
*AF 75mm f 1.8
*AF 85mm f 1.4 Mark I and II
*AF 135mm f 1.8

Samyang also has Video AF lenses that can do the same, the difference with these is that they are more optimised for videography, has a modular system of attachments and has weather sealing (compared to some of the photographic versions) and they are almoat identical in shape, size, weight and handling:
*V-AF 20mm T 2
*V-AF 24mm T 2
*V-AF 35mm T 2
*V-AF 45mm T2
*V-AF 75mm T 2

Today my Godox X2T arrived, and everything seems to work fine. The only thing that confused me when I first tried it was that the live view automatically switched to showing a brightened image instead of reflecting the manual exposure (which is how I have the camera set). On my Fujis I had to switch display modes to do this, which I always forgot to reset after, so the Sony method is definitely better in this respect. Also, the shutter speed won't go faster that 1/250 with the Godox attached and turned on, so is being limited to the fastest synch speed - again this removes a source of error.

Here is an example I shot with two flashes, this is to test MFD of WA lenses as part of another thread I have going

Most mirroless cameras are limited to 160th to 250th shutter speed when using flash (some can go to 320th but those are more specialized and tend to be very expensive). Also most won't work with flash in Electronic Shutter (the only ones I know that will do are Sony a9 III, II, I, Nikon Z9 and Z8 and Olympus OM-1, E-M1 X, E-M1 III and II).

All of the photos look great. Are the camera/lenses not working for you?
The reverse, now that I have the Sony 20mm, Laowa 12mm and Samyang AF 75mm. I struggled for the first week due to the poor performance of the legacy OM lenses plus the terrible performance with the two Canon 50mm lenses I tried but everything is a lot sunnier now I have “proper” glass. I expected to struggle more with the camera controls (compared to Fuji) but even that side has gone well as I have carefully worked through each setting. Getting functional flash capability yesterday (with the arrival of the new Godox controller) is pretty much icing on the cake. The one thing I am really missing is a cable release, but I picked up an IR trigger so I think I will get over that 😁
